We like:
Flora, Charlotte, Cecily, Anoushka, Louise and Maud for girls
Clarence, Erik, Frederick, Gustav, Leon, Percy for a boy
Are these names too posh? We move in those circles, but don't want to limit kid with names that only work in posh circles.

I quite like Cecily and Maud and Gustave and Percy. I do wonder if concerns about it being slang for penis are overstated. Does anyone under about 70 ever do this?

LetHimHaveIt · 03/05/2022 17:39

'We move in those circles, but don't want to limit kid with names that only work in posh circles'

😂 God Bless You 🤣

MassiveSalad22 · 03/05/2022 17:02

Oh and Percy - not for me. Posh. Avoid.

(Previous post should have said are a Claire and George, not and, obviously)

MassiveSalad22 · 03/05/2022 17:00

Flora - love! Not posh.
Charlotte - dull
Cecily - fine, bit lispy.
Anoushka - love but a bit random if you and DH and Claire and George or something equally mainstream.
Louise - dated, dull, much prefer Louisa
Maud - I feel only an Apatow can pull that off but I do like it. Maeve? Love Maeve.

Clarence - wet although I know a fab Clarence
Erik - nice but very grown up. Will be a grown up for most of his life though.
Frederick - boring, everywhere, not posh
Leon - see Eric. Not posh. Leo, Theo v popular.
Gustav - like Gus

grxxxx · 03/05/2022 16:54

If you need to use the word posh to describe yourself you most definitely are not

Flora = ok , quite pretty
Charlotte = classic and pretty
Cecile = classic and pretty
Louise = over used , ok
Maud = dreary
Clarence = try hard
Erik = someone who cannot spell Eric ? Scandi ? Erik the Viking comic strip
Frederick = ok but not shortened to Freddy / Freddie both very over used
Gustav = try hard
Leon = pleasant but nicer as Leo , just my opinion
Percy = poor child will suffer a lifetime of penis jokes

Christian names will depend on your surname as to how balanced they both look and sound together

SpaceJamtart · 03/05/2022 16:32

Flora, Charlotte, Cecily, Erik and Leon are nice

Fizzyfish · 03/05/2022 16:24

'We move in those circles' Cringe 😅

PukkaP · 02/05/2022 21:30

Percy is slang for penis

Yes... Don't go there!

Fivebeanchilli · 02/05/2022 21:37

Flora - nice. Normal. Not posh at all
Charlotte - lovely but super popular
Cecily - gorgeous. My favourite of your names Anoushka - nice
Louise - don't like it. Dull. Prefer Louisa
Maud - ok
Clarence - not keen
Erik - don't like
Frederick - nice
Gustav - ok
Leon - lovely. My favourite of your boys' list
Percy - no. People think of it as slang for penis

PukkaP · 02/05/2022 21:30

Percy is slang for penis

emuloc · 02/05/2022 21:27

I personally like the name Maude, and Louise. The names on the list do not read as posh to me, other than perhaps the name Anoushka.

IStandWithMaya · 02/05/2022 21:23

Flora - yes
Charlotte - lovely
Cecily - lovely
Anoushka - no
Louise - yes
Maud - a bit dour
Clarence - no
Erik - no
Frederick - maybe
Gustav - no
Leon - yes
Percy - he'll be called Percy Pig

LadyHooHa · 02/05/2022 21:05

Actually agree with PP re Anoushka - too "try hard posh".

Also like Fleur and Peregrine.

Comedycook · 02/05/2022 20:59

Flora, Charlotte, Cecily, Anoushka, Louise and Maud for girls

The only ones which stand out as posh for me are Cecily and Anoushka. I love Anoushka and Louise. Please not Maud. It's so frumpy and sounds like a parlour maid

Clarence, Erik, Frederick, Gustav, Leon, Percy

Gustav and Clarence sound posh and pretty awful to be honest. I love Leon. Frederick is a good safe choice which doesn't indicate social class and has a good range of nicknames.

All perfectly normal names. Would Percy be Percival? Clarence is fabulous.

DoctorZog · 02/05/2022 20:52

Flora - ok, much prefer Florence or Fleur Charlotte - deathly boring
Cecily - nice
Anoushka - meh
Louise - bit dated, prefer Eloise or Elise
Maud - dreadful. Maeve? Marguerite?
Clarence - horrible, really old man
Erik - looks Scandinavian, Eric is ok
Frederick - fine, lots of Freddies around
Gustav - horrible. Angus?
Leon - fine
Percy - terrible

None strike me as particularly 'posh', more old fashioned, which is the trend these days...

KylieCharlene · 02/05/2022 11:44

Cecily and Leon are my favorites.

Anoushka reminds me of Moussaka- so not that!.

Riverlee · 02/05/2022 11:41

A mixture of names on your list.

Flora - pretty, but also makes me think of margarine
Charlotte -way overused, although I like
Cecily - okay
Anoushka - sounds European/Russian to me
Louise - prefer Louisa or Elouise
Maud - granny chic, not to my taste,

Clarence - same as Maud, not to my taste,
Erik - like, but European spelling
Frederick - nice
Gustav - European/German name
Leon - ok, not to my taste
Percy - Prefer Percival,

Mistlewoeandwhine · 02/05/2022 11:33

No to Anoushka or Percy (pig) but I like all the others.

blameitonthecaffeine · 02/05/2022 11:21

I love Charlotte and Anoushka.
I like Flora and Cecily.
I dislike Louise and Maud

I like Frederick and Leon is ok.
Not keen on any of the other boys names.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/05/2022 23:13

No one who was actually ‘posh’ would use that term. None of the girl choices are especially grand names though, and the boys not at all/bit odd

Flora - pretty, classic, good choice
Charlotte -way overused, dump
Cecily - nice, quite popular now, slightly fussy
Anoushka - try hard, Disney Princess, dump
Louise - ok, bit dull, too early to revive
Maud - elegant - good choice

Clarence - it’ll probably get revived shortly but I think it’s a step too far right now
Erik - same. And spelling it with a k doesn’t help
Frederick - way overused, but nice enough
Gustav - odd unless there is a heritage reason
Leon - best of the lot. Leo very popular though
Percy - This is just silly

AntarcticTern · 01/05/2022 21:49

I would say that only Anoushka, Clarence and Gustav are posh. My favourites are Cecily and Leon.

Mumofgirls2017 · 01/05/2022 21:47

Charlotte and Leon are a bit more middle of the road. My favourites are Flora and Frederick though

aleebaleebee · 01/05/2022 20:49

I like Flora and Leon.
Dislike Clarence, Maud, Gustav, Percy and Anoushka.

Agree with PP that Anoushka sounds wannabe posh.

Suggestions of names with perhaps a similar feel that I prefer - Lawrence (Lawrie), Peter and Maeve.

PortalooSunset · 01/05/2022 20:42

I wouldn't describe them as posh, never mind 'too posh'. Like all your girl choices although Anoushka strikes me as try hard/wannabe posh.
Percy is a definite no from me unless a family name. Clarence has always sounded like a girl's name to me.
Peregrine?
