Caspian with the nickname Ian? Maybe McCoy or Altair as a middle name?

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 11:53

My thinking was the S,P, and CK sound

Elysant · 26/04/2022 11:51

Oh, Caspian nn Spike is so sweet!

fancyfrogs · 26/04/2022 11:50

Ian is awful please don't give your baby that nickname.
There is a kebab shop near me called caspians. So it makes me think of that and therefore dislike. Sorry!

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 11:47

Caspian and Ian are both 2-syllables, so why would you shorten.

Couldn't you use Caspian and use a nn like Spike instead, seeing as you don't want to use Cass

Elysant · 26/04/2022 08:09

I love Caspian, it's so unusual, but feels cozy and familiar and not obtrusive
I love Cass as nickname, but for you maybe Sappy or Pian from -aspian part of the name

delshell · 26/04/2022 07:03

It's a bit too Narnia for me. I'd avoid it for the same reason I'd avoid Hermione and the association with Harry Potter. Both nice names but for me the link is too strong - and I'm speaking as someone who loves both Narnia and HP!

headspin10 · 25/04/2022 22:32

An alternative might be Jasper.... in my head they're kind of similar.

dotdotdotdash · 25/04/2022 22:31

Sorry, I'm another one who thinks Caspian sounds pretentious

headspin10 · 25/04/2022 22:30

Always loved Caspian, such a beautiful name. I wouldn't use Ian personally, though it is an option of course , but I'd use Cass which I also love and think is very cool.

outbackjulie · 25/04/2022 22:25

Oh don't give your son a name like that. Caspian is an awful, pompous sounding name.

JennyForeigner · 25/04/2022 22:23

Heresafe · 25/04/2022 20:39

I love Caspian. Probably especially due to Cs Lewis / Prince Caspian as always loved those books

All I can think about is Reepicheep

CrowAndArrow · 25/04/2022 22:22

Caspian is an awesome name. Ian is awful.

Casper or Cass is good as a nn. Doesn't matter about your cousin.

GinUnicorn · 25/04/2022 22:17

Love Caspian but not overly keen on Ian.

User48751490 · 25/04/2022 22:08

The friendly ghost

knittingaddict · 25/04/2022 22:05

I'm a big fan if the Narnia books so Caspian is a winner for me. Please do not ruin that by calling him Ian. Why on earth would you do that?

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/04/2022 22:02

Why in the name of god would you call him Caspian nn Ian?!

if you want to call him Iain call him that, if you can’t use Cass as a nn find a different name. If you aren’t in Scotland you are w bit early on the ian revival FYI

DemBonesDemBones · 25/04/2022 21:21

Ah ok, that's fair enough. Definitely not Cas/Cass then. I just can't imagine a baby Ian! But who knows maybe it's due a comeback?!

InletsandBrambles · 25/04/2022 21:18

@DemBonesDemBones My female cousin has gone by Cas/Cass/Cassie her whole life and I would feel really weird calling my kid my cousins name. Because of that it’s also a girl name in my mind- I know it’s not actually just a girl name but I just can’t move past that association. However, If he grows up and that’s what he wants I wouldn’t be upset. I also love Ian, although apparently I’m in the minority on this forum, lol.

As for middle names I think either is fine. I tend to think middle names aren’t that important and you can pretty much go with anything - they’re really not used often.

Kanaloa · 25/04/2022 21:10

I think Caspian is nice but Ian as a shortening is a huge stretch. There seems to be a trend on mumsnet at the moment for really tenuously linked nicknames. As if the parent wants a long name plus a proper short one/is trying to get two names they like for one. For me Ian short for Caspian sounds really really awkward. Cass would be fine and expected.

DemBonesDemBones · 25/04/2022 21:05

Absolutely love it! But Ian is awful! What's wrong with Cas/Cass?

itssquidstella · 25/04/2022 20:59

I know a nice Caspian. Cass works well as a nickname. Ian less so...

buzzwoodyandjessie · 25/04/2022 20:43

Lovely name, I'd shorten it to cass definitely not Ian.

Minikievs · 25/04/2022 20:42

My DD has a friend called Caspian. He's known as Cass. It's a lovely name. Please don't shorten it to Ian 😂

Heresafe · 25/04/2022 20:40

Ian is such a different name somehow it surprises me as a nickname as it’s a name in its own right but maybe that’s me. Either way I like both!
