What would you think if you met a baby 'Hades'?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Luredbyapomegranate · 30/05/2022 22:51

Holy Shit.

Please now reveal you are joking..

toomuchlaundry · 30/05/2022 14:18

Poor child. Does it have a normal middle name? Did anyone actually speak to them before they made it official?

gggbird · 30/05/2022 14:10

Yep

TranquilAirOfMorning · 30/05/2022 14:02

Did they end up calling their child this?

WeasilyPleased · 26/04/2022 22:29

Awful ridiculous and hopefully a wind-up.

VeneziaGiulia45 · 26/04/2022 16:18

Sorry, just read it's not you naming your child this.

I'd do everything in my power to prevent the parents from going through with this.

VeneziaGiulia45 · 26/04/2022 16:15

Why would you do such a thing? 😵

CatsArePeople · 26/04/2022 15:50

I love the name, but more appropriate for a fictional character than an actual kid, who may not be happy at all. I know a Lucifer, and he goes by Louis.

how about Hadrian?

MinoucheSapphic · 26/04/2022 13:10

I would wonder if the parents come from another culture and don't know what the name "Hades" means in the Western world. I have encountered some odd names - e.g. Titiporn, Orel - where that has been the case. Either that, or they're very young parents who heard the name in pop culture and didn't understand its negative connotations.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 26/04/2022 13:01

My parents wanted to give me a particularly wacky name. They eventually decided to make it my middle name and to give me a reasonably unusual but mainstream first name, and second middle name which was really boring conventional. All bases covered. I remain very grateful to them. I can reveal or use the wacky alternative name as I please.

I think you have to get the rest of the family on board and stage an intervention.

or just insist they call him Hades Henry so when they come to their senses they can use that

Great idea here.

Fingers crossed they see the light 💡

Corsica Your DS has the right idea! Technically, Hades is god of the land of the dead, rather than the dead themselves. But that doesn't take away from you DS's very good sense.

I was pretty impressed he knew it - then he reeled off several other gods - Ares, Zeus...

then he blew it by saying some YouTuber talks about them connected to Minecraft 🙄

DemBonesDemBones · 25/04/2022 20:56

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat Antigone was absolutely kick ass and brilliant! A brilliant name for a strong girl.

Time40 · 25/04/2022 20:00

While Hades isn't the equivalent of Satan, naming your child after the god of the underworld is still questionable

Well, I've learned something - I didn't know Hades was a god; I thought Hades was just the place, the Underworld.

CorsicaDreaming · 25/04/2022 19:40

I asked my 9 year old DS his view if a child came into his class called Hades,

"Why the hell would you call a child that? He's the god of death so not for children who are just starting out on life, it could be a name for old people though."

Gotta love 9 year old logic...

Spudlet · 25/04/2022 19:36

Badabing badaboom, I’d be thinking of the blue haired villain in the Disney film.

I’d also think the parents were somewhat strange if I was having a ‘nice’ day, or just fucking idiots if I wasn’t…

Sweetpea1532 · 25/04/2022 19:29

@gggbird
I think it is best to just let them get on with it...nothing you are going to say will change their minds, sadly. Not sure where you are located, but In the US you can change a baby's name before the first birthday without a big deal...you can hope they come to their senses before then.
IF they ASK your opinion, you can then give it..how about changing the 'd' to a 'y' for the name Hayes?
All the personalised items can be changed without too much trouble.
In the meantime, have you decided on an affectionate name for your little nephew?
That at least lets you out of having to use Hades...we call little ones in our family ' little guy, peanut, pumpkin, monkeyman, etc.'..you can come up with your special aunty-nephew name for him.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/04/2022 19:27

That they’d chosen a mummy swear word for their firstborn.

or perhaps hoping for a post birth Rosemary’s type baby pact? - I will give you my firstborn if you will cover rising energy prices -

scottishnames · 25/04/2022 19:22

OP Ye gods! (Literally.) If at all possible, just get them to look at some proper ancient sources and the criticism related to them.
If anyone is happy to name a baby after stuff like this:
"Sure, he kidnapped Persephone, but he was so madly in love with her (I blame Eros, kidding) that he would do absolutely ANYTHING to be with her. Since he didn’t like being on Olympus (Zeus’ fault) he needed her to come down and be with him." So rape is OK if a man really, really needs the woman?? Just NO!!! Besides, Persephone kind of chose to stay with Hades throughout all of winter by eating those three pomegranate seeds. No she didn't; he tricked her - gaslighting or something similar we'd call it these days.

I could say much more....

viques · 25/04/2022 19:18

Marty13 · 25/04/2022 17:49

I'd wonder why they picked Hades rather than Anubis or Pluto...

Because Pluto is like a cartoon dog, innit!!!!!! Raises eyebrows, shrugs, titters behind hand……

VeryQuaintIrene · 25/04/2022 19:17

Please try to persuade them not to do this - show them the almost unanimous appalled responses on this thread!

BluKorner · 25/04/2022 19:17

Tsuni · 25/04/2022 19:06

There was a thread on here recently about some fucking idiots people that had picked the name Genghis for their baby. Your brother and SIL should set up a play date with baby Hades and baby Genghis. That would be sweet.

I mean the name is perfectly normal in other cultures but yes, let’s assume they’re all fucking idiots…
