Hi, I would like to call my daughtr Venus (shortcut:Vee). Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty 😀Do you think it's good idea? I like also traditional Victoria 😀

Surely vina like that sounds like vagina??

How to lower the tone of a naming thread... well done mumsnetters Wink

I was coming on here to say our rescue dog is called Venus and people do mishear that as Penis (Midlands accent).
What about Verity? I just read a book where the character Verity was abbreviated to Vee.

user3199 · 22/04/2022 15:08

Venus/Penis rhyme in my (Scottish) accent, but I wouldn't personally have thought of the link.

If you like V names - I know a Verity and a Vina (pronounced vine-a not vee-na).

Synchrony · 22/04/2022 14:52

I think it's bold but nice.

It does not rhyme with penis or tennis in my South UK accent at all. Penis clearly has an i sound and Venus has a u sound. No one I know would think of anything other than the goddess or Williams. What a ridiculous comment.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 14:09

My first thought was of the razors too.

There are other nice names starting with V if you want the nn Vee

emmathedilemma · 22/04/2022 14:01

I thought of the razors rather than Venus Williams so on that basis it's a no from me! Victoria is a very sound name.

Moonshine160 · 22/04/2022 13:26

Yeah I’d just stick with Victoria .

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2022 13:03

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

Are you pronouncing penis to rhyme with Tennis?

If so, I think you are confused. I meant the male genitals, not the commendian's surname.

Schulte · 22/04/2022 12:54

Please don’t.

pizzaand · 22/04/2022 12:53

It does rhyme with penis - pee-nuhs is a pretty standard pronunciation (areas may vary) and vee-nuhs

I wouldn't associate Venus with Penis though

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

What's your accent? I think it does rhyme with penis for most people.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 12:40

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2022 12:08

I think it's fab. Don't worry about it rhyming with Penis- it will be character building for her.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 12:07

Yeah, I would imagine Venus Williams has made the name seem less out there. It's quite bold but bold can be good. Quite like it the more I ponder it.

I hope her birth is a dreamy and elegant as Botticelli's painting! Wink

Very associated with Venus Williams - more so than the goddess. There's also a well known shaving brand Venus. It has been in very low but consistent use in England and Wales - so not completely off the wall - but the name has too much baggage for me to want to use.

midsomermurderess · 22/04/2022 12:02

People will know it from Venus Williams, and there’s a marvellous woman right there, as well as the classical reference. I think it’s quite bold, but prefer it to Victoria. But then, she could be rather marvellous too.
