So I love the written name Morris for our son and the shortenings Mossie or Moss... But as soon as I said it out loud to my husband I heard 'Maurice' and have totally gone off the name now Easter Wink. Any suggestions of similar names/names containing morris (don't love Morrison or Morrissey sadly, Amos is a possible... ) That's as far as I've got, I need ideas please !

I'm not sure I understand your post. Maurice is sometimes pronounced French-style (especially in North America) but I've only heard Morris pronounced à l'anglaise. So I'm not sure what the issue is?

I think the OP is worried that when she says Morris, people will hear Maurice and then say Maureece

Marcus?

If you spell it Beaurice you;d give him more nn options, @jaundice

Per some of the suggestions above, I think Boris has become unusable, owing to the nobhead of the same name. Baurice anyone?

The parents of the lovely clever cool Morris we know were keen on old fashioned names but sick of popular Charlie, Alfie, Freddie, Henry/Harry etc so trawled First World War era cemetery near them.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 14:48

Joris is Yorris

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 14:48

Joris or Boris

'Some people call me Maurice
'Cause I speak of the pompatus of love'

For some people Maurice = maw-REECE rather than morris.

Kite22 · 20/04/2022 23:55

I'm wondering how Morris is said other than Maurice Confused

If I saw Morris written down I would just have assumed the parents didn't know how to spell Maurice, so used the spelling for the car.

Sorry, no suggestions, just want to know how it is pronounced.

Maurice is pronounced Morris in the UK. It’s just how it’s spelt as a first name. (The Mau-Reece pronunciation is from Southern US.)

I quite like it and would go with that, but I guess Ernest, Arnold, Cedric are similarly 1920s/30s names, or Linus, Jonas, Silas have a similar sound.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 20/04/2022 17:38

Mossie though is very 'red faced 75 yr old Irish farmer at the mart in his jumper and blazer'.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 20/04/2022 17:36

I know a Moss who's just Moss. But Amos or Moses are good names, and FAR nicer than dusty old Morris.

midsomermurderess · 20/04/2022 17:25

Clement, Ernest. Names with a 1930-ish ring to them.

Firebird83 · 20/04/2022 09:30

I’d stick with Morris!

What's wrong with Maurice?

We know a super cool gorgeous looking 19 year old Morris.
Have known him since he was a baby. His family call him Mo.

Stick with Morris though if you love it!
DD went to nursery with a boy named Morris (who would be 12 now) and he was never called Maurice... always Morris.
