Alden?

Thoughts on the boy's name Alden (pronounced All-den)? Is it too close to Alton and therefore might cause "Alton Towers" teasing? Do you think it sounds nice?

I like it. Sounds dignified.

RainCheckMate · 19/04/2022 11:19

@Snoopfroggyfrogg yeah maybe I'm overthinking it. All the most popular names can be made fun of if you try hard enough.

I think most names have the potential for daft-but-not-offensive nicknames or teasing such as Alden Towers but I can't see anything that would make a child's life miserable about it.

I guess we all have our preferences, it just doesn't sound very appealing to my ear? I have a feeling it could be frequently mispronounced and become a ball-ache. Each to their own though!

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

I have a nephew called Alden. He had an American parent, but lives in the UK. His parents wanted to call him after an American hero - he was nearly Buzz! - and Alden is Neil Armstrong’s middle name.
He has an American parent - still alive!

Anyway, he’s 10. No name related issues that I am aware of.

I went to school with one (in the 80s) but haven't met another one since. Not keen on it personally but it's not a terrible name. It was pronounced the way you want it to be.

peaceinourtime · 17/04/2022 10:36

Its nice, very old fashioned but as we know all names come back in vogue .

Luzina · 17/04/2022 10:28

I know one but it’s Aldhun. Never been called Al as far as I know

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2022 10:26

I read it as Aiden

Oblomov22 · 17/04/2022 10:26

Not keen. Thought it was Aiden at first.

Of all the names out there, I'd hate to be saddled with this Easter Confused

RainCheckMate · 17/04/2022 10:06

@TwinklyBranch you're mispronouncing either the supermarket or Alden.

OP posts:
TwinklyBranch · 17/04/2022 09:57

Sounds like the name of a budget supermarket chain.

WhyTheWhales · 17/04/2022 09:53

I don't mind it, but I'm not in love with it either.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 17/04/2022 09:35

Yes UK, everyone pronounces they way you do and never heard him called another version.

RainCheckMate · 17/04/2022 09:23

That was @NaturalBlondeYeahRight

@NaturalBlondeYeahRight

Know an Alden in my school - cool name (and lovely kid) and no nicknames/short versions.
Nice. Is that in the UK? Do you know if he's often correcting people's pronunciations?

Kanaloa · 16/04/2022 21:32

I can’t imagine Alton Towers leading to bad teasing though? It’s not really an embarrassing thing to be associated with particularly, is it?

I think Alden is a nice name.

SpaceJamtart · 16/04/2022 21:28

I don't mind it but Alden autocorrected to Alpen in my phone like the cereal.

sorryforswearing · 16/04/2022 21:09

Never heard it before but surely he’d get Al den rather than All den and be having to correct people constantly.

Fivebeanchilli · 16/04/2022 21:04

I normally really dislike sn type names but I rather like this one.

LittleBitHeiressLittleBitIris · 16/04/2022 20:26

Misread it as Aiden.
Pronounce it as Al-den.
