Jago or Raphael?

I know they're v different.... but which would you go for?

We have Cornish reasons to choose Jago, but I have a real soft spot for Raphael (which I would shorten to Rafe).

Short, v British, boring surname - in case that's relevant.

If you hate them both then no need to comment (wishful thinking maybe!).

thanks for all the feedback, it's so hard to choose!

Jago is Jay-go, I'm Cornish so it appeals for that reason but I do get the Arlo / Milo / Theo / Hugo thing maybe making it seem very of-the-moment.

I worry Raphael is a bit exotic for what has every chance of being a little blonde British boy, but it is SO beautiful!

@MinoucheSapphic

I really like Raphael for my own son. I love the imagery (archangel, painter), the meaning in Hebrew and the multicultural quality... though the different pronunciations make me a bit hesitant. Jago isn't really my personal style but it's a nice name. It reminds me of Dr Jago Cooper who does historical documentaries.
What are the different pronunciations you've heard? My Raphael is 11 and I've only ever heard people say it one way ie the way we say it.

Jago, a wonderful name!

MinglingFlamingo · 13/04/2022 13:09

Oooo tough one

I love both

Jago- being Cornish it's a popular Cornish name which I love for that reason

Raphael - I do love Rafe as a nm. And it has that certain European exoticness about it

Sorry no help whatsoever

Raphael!

ThatshallotBaby · 13/04/2022 10:48

Raphael

housemaus · 13/04/2022 10:47

Raphael for ease, I think - it's better known, I've never encountered Jago and wouldn't know how to pronounce it (yago, or as it looks?).

BUT that isn't necessarily an issue - plenty of people have to tell someone how to pronounced their name! - and they're both lovely!

veronicagoldberg · 13/04/2022 10:39

Raphael is lovely!

Jago is a nice enough name, but Raphael rolls off the tongue better, in my opinion.

toastofthetown · 13/04/2022 10:37

I prefer Raphael. Two syllable names ending in O are such a huge trend at the moment, I think they’ll date as a genre (similar to the -ette names feeling very 1960s). Jago blends in with Theo, Milo, Arlo, Leo, Hugo et al.

Jago only if a cornish connection
I don't like Raphael or Rafe or Raph

Not keen on either of them

inmyslippers · 13/04/2022 09:38

I love both, can see your predicament

LondonQueen · 13/04/2022 09:38

Raphael is lovely name.

WalkingOnSonshine · 13/04/2022 09:38

Jago is one of my favourites.

ShowOfHands · 13/04/2022 09:38

I have a Raphael and a short, boring surname. They seem to balance each other! It's a fab name imho and has good nickname potential. Organically, he's evolved to be different names to different people.

I love Jago too though so you can't really go wrong.

DollyPartBaked · 13/04/2022 09:37

Love Jago

1000yellowdaisies · 13/04/2022 09:31

Raphael, its lovely and one of my favourites

DotDotDotDotDot · 13/04/2022 09:31

I really like both of these boys names, they are quite different in style though aren’t they.
If I had to choose though I’d go for Raphael (I also like the Rafael spelling) as it has a lovely meaning and I think the pronunciation is easier/more straight forward. Good luck.
