Demi

Any thoughts on Demi? My sister has suggested it for my baby girl.
I'm not keen.
Also suggested Demi-Leigh but don't like that either. Feels a bit naff and chavy.
I want something with the initial D but something more solid and traditional.

It's okay sound wise, but agree that the meaning is a bit off-putting (and there is the whole more recent use of demi as short for demisexual that could be awkward).

Traditional depends on what tradition you're pulling from, but for feminine names with D I think of as solid (though a lot of others have already been mentioned that are also great):

Dalia
Danica
Davri
Dea
Dian
Diantha

bruffin · 15/04/2022 13:03

She was born Demetria Guynes

Qwill · 15/04/2022 12:51

Della?

Gardeningcreature · 15/04/2022 12:48

Demi-Leigh was the name of a horrible bully at dds school. Awful and yes chavvy springs to mind.

Cindie943811A · 15/04/2022 12:28

I once read an interview with Demi Moore who explained that her DM wanted a French sounding name and sort-of invented Demi (pronounced Demmee) So not short for anything.

Some suggestions
Damaris (Da-Maris so no dam involved)
Della
Dinah
Deandra, Diandra
Dominique
Dionne
Danielle
Deanna

bruffin · 15/04/2022 12:13

Most Demis are because of Demi Moore or Levato. They don't realise that those Demis were Demetria to start with.

doggyweewee · 15/04/2022 02:27

Had a friend called Demi Leigh

Called her half pint (as in the French Demi)

Grin

I think Demi use to be feminine and elegant but now it's a bit chavvy especially with the edition of Leigh. On par with Paris Marie, Sammy Jo, Kelsey Mae.... if you get the drift Wink

Padderbadger · 15/04/2022 02:19

I'm not keen on Demi, how about Dulcie, Dara, Dina, Dahlia?

ThinkForAMinute · 14/04/2022 03:25

Demi and Demi-Leigh were popular in the 90s and that’s where they should stay. There’s plenty of far nicer D names.

Dinoteeth · 14/04/2022 01:25

Demi makes me think of demi-jars bottle things for fermenting wine.

Pegasussnail · 14/04/2022 01:12

Dawn

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/04/2022 00:19

@helpmum2003

I agree with you OP.

Daisy
Delilah
Darcey

Darcy is no better than Demi, and Daisy not much

You are right OP

Although if you are using it as a short form of Demetria, it’s ok

Dora
Dorothea - nn Dorey?
Davina / Davinia
Daphne
Dinah
Diana

babyjellyfish · 13/04/2022 12:18

Don't like it. It means "half" in French. I especially don't like it hyphenated with another name, and Demi-Leigh sounds like spreadable cheese.

Daphne, Delia, Delphine?

whywhythough · 13/04/2022 12:03

Half Confused

Nope. Not a nice name at all.

Elysant · 13/04/2022 11:59

I love Demi because it's easy to spell in most EU countries, despite being English name

other suggestions
Dilys
Delyth
Darcy
Dulcie
Dora
Dorta/Dorya or Dorina or other variation of Dorothea
Despina
Delphi
Dawn
Delia

I'm personally fan of Demi.

C25kBecky · 12/04/2022 22:49

I went to school with a Demi. Vile.

Daria is nice.

Hohofortherobbers · 12/04/2022 22:32

I don't like Demi much, Daphne however is just gorgeous!

WeasilyPleased · 12/04/2022 22:28

Dinah
Dora
Darla
Demelza
Damaris
Are my favourite D names

sleeplessinmumsville · 12/04/2022 21:24

I like Demi

I like Dana and Darcy too

ImInStealthMode · 12/04/2022 20:16

Dakota
Darcey
Drew
Daisy
Dina
Devon

Not Demi-Leigh. It's even closer to Dairylea than the '-Leigh' girl at my school that used to get a lot of cheese jokes.

KirstenBlest · 12/04/2022 20:09

Demi-Leigh?

Plenty of nn options:
Dairylea
Dummy
Demily
..

SecretVictoria · 12/04/2022 18:56

I agree OP. I could never use the name as when I worked for the lingerie chain on which my user name is based we had; semi-demi, lightly lined demi….you get the drift.

scottishnames · 12/04/2022 18:54

Damaris
Deborah
Dahlia
Daria
Davina
Dawn
Delia
Delphine/Delfina
Despina
Diantha
Dido
Dilys
Donata/Donatella
Drusilla
Dulcie

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 12/04/2022 18:29

Demi IS naff. So are Darcie and Daisy.

Delphi means womb. Not sure why it's having a moment on Mumsnet right now.

I think the best options are:
Daphne
Dervla
Dorothea

GoodSoup · 12/04/2022 18:12

I don’t like Demi and Demi-Leigh is awful.

I like Delilah. Are you fixed on D’?
