I’m after some good Scottish names

I love eilidh but I’m worried about it being too popular and I love marsaili, but I’m worried about it being too unusual.

I am in Scotland in the highlands so no worries there.

Thanks.

I think Mhairi is a beautiful name. My son has a traditional Scottish name mentioned up thread and I love it!

Barrawarra · 10/04/2022 22:11

Love Murdo and Morag.

IHaveaMarsaili · 10/04/2022 22:04

As per username... never been a problem for her, does have to explain the pronunciation, and we're down south.

Have you also thought of Elspeth instead of Ealasaid if Elizabeth's a family name.

fullofexcuses · 10/04/2022 21:58

I have an Eilidh. Have always loved the name and was set on using it if I had a girl. There was 1 other Eilidh in her nursery class but we haven't met any others since.
I also have a boy named Finlay.
My DSIL is Scottish living in England and has named her girls Ailsa and Merran.

I also love Mirren, Struan, Euan and Blair.

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2022 21:56

Ruairidh is such a beautiful name and what I would name a boy. Alasdair is also nice! (I love Archie but prefer for a pet.)

For a girl - Isla, Ainsley, Eilidh, Caitlin and Heather are all lovely.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 10/04/2022 21:52

We have a Fraser, my husband is Scottish

JenniferAlisonPhilipaSue · 10/04/2022 21:50

I'm Scottish.

Mirren is the name of my daughter's bully.

Eilidh is lovely but outdated now.

Also outdated are Ailsa and Mhairi (lots of friends in the 80s had those names).

Morag - is that not a cats name from a children's book? V old fashioned too.

Names that are still in fashion include: Skye, Isla, Iona, Arran, Lewis, Harris, Finley,

I do like Marsali and can see that coming into fashion again due to outlander.

Ailsa, ailish, Morag, Sileas, Ceitidh

Ruaraidh, Calum, Iain, Campbell,

To throw a few in that I don’t think have been mentioned.

@DancingBarefootOnIce

I like Alasdair and Fergus for boys.

I'd never heard of Marsaili - is it pronounced MAR-suh-lee? That's what one of the baby sites says but they can't be trusted.

I looooooove Eilidh. It’s my 12 year olds name. We are central belt in Scotland and she is the only Eilidh in her primary school of 400ish kids and one of 2 in her gymnastics club. If that helps any. X
