Baby boy names…opinions

Frenchie15 · 07/04/2022 19:15

We have a baby boy due in July. We have 3 names we both agree on but I am struggling to pick a favourite and likely to wait to see him before settling on one. However I am interested to hear others opinions on these names…

Finley Elijah
Rowan Jude
Ezra Jude

Our surname is a one a syllable surname beginning with S.

Finley Elijah S for me

Nice list of names. Rowan I prefer for a girl and there's a risk with uni-sex names that over time they transition to girl names the way Hilary and Kerry did.

RoMan has catapulted up charts and is on course to enter the top 10 names in the next couple of years. A lifetime of correcting people that "it is a W not an M in the middle". I wouldn't pick Rowan or Rohan anymore for that reason. Look at the statistics:

I like Finley. Had you thought about Flynn as well. Jude is a beuatiful name and doesn't merge with other names.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/04/2022 09:45

I like Finley but would go Finley Jude as otherwise its a mouthful. Also like Ezra

brokengoalposts · 08/04/2022 09:43

My ds who is 20 has a friend called Rowan, I've never liked it, but I know most people do.

Ezra is lovely but I wouldn't use it unless you're Jewish, although I know these lines are crossed more often nowadays.

Finley, I know loads. Very popular where I am.

CatSpeakForDummies · 08/04/2022 09:26

I think Rowan for a girl in Scotland might avoid the trend of it becoming too girly for a boy. Everyone I know pronounces it "Row to rhyme with cow" -an for a girl and "Row to rhyme with no" -an fir a boy. You'd think they were different names.

Synchrony · 08/04/2022 08:22

Ezra Jude would make me assume that you are very religious, if that matters to you.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/04/2022 23:38

If your surname is one syllable I’d go for Elijah as I’m pretty sure it’s going to work best, or otherwise Jude

Finlay is very overused, Ezra somewhat overused, Rowan getting v overused.

AliceW89 · 07/04/2022 23:16

It’s not on your list, but I’d mix up your options and have Rowan Elijah Smith (or whatever). I like both names and I think if you’ve got a relatively short, one syllable surname, a longer more flowing middle name suits. Rowan Jude Smith just sounds a bit staccato to me. Second would be Finlay Elijah, I prefer Rowan though.

eatentoomanygrapes · 07/04/2022 23:08

It's funny as soon as I clicked on this thread I knew Jude would be one of the names. It seems to be everywhere at the moment, not sure if you find that a good/bad thing but thought it was worth mentioning.

WalkingOnSonshine · 07/04/2022 22:17

We have Rohan Jude on our list for DC2, it flows really well. I prefer the h spelling though.

Ezra would be my next favourite from your list.

WeasilyPleased · 07/04/2022 22:15

Rowan definitely.

namechange46783 · 07/04/2022 22:02

I would never choose Jude as I've read Jude the Obscure ConfusedSadConfused Love Rowan though!

LoveSpringDaffs · 07/04/2022 21:56

Congratulations!!!

Finley Jude (by a long way!!)

bloominglovelyorange · 07/04/2022 21:51

The Scottish official baby name charts are out today and as you'll see - Rowan is the top fastest rising girl name jumping over 40 places and well within the top 100 for girls. Interesting it's a girl name in Scotland, I expect it will stop being using for boys in Scotland completely soon sadly as that's just the way it seems to go with former unisex names. They seem to end up girl names.

Rainbowbaby13 · 07/04/2022 21:49

Personally I like Jude Rowan

Electrox · 07/04/2022 21:47

I like Ezra best. I don't think it's overused, I've never met anyone called Ezra. Finley is more common IMO.

bloominglovelyorange · 07/04/2022 21:42

Rowan is my baby girls name @Frenchie15 - so to me it's a girl name, but I know in reality it's unisex. I had a gender surprise but wasn't going to use Rowan for a boy as I was worried about its climbing in popularity for girls in countries like Scotland (where it's top 100 for girls but not boys) and America.
I've asked family not to shorten her name to Row but it seems to happen all the time so I can see that nickname is inevitable - do you like it? Only other negative is that the name Roman with an M has boomed up the England & Wales official ONS chart to be a top 30 name. Roman is the fastest rising boy name. There's 2 Romans with an M at the local nursery and then with my Rowan too everyone gets confused. I've had her called Roman so many times by so many people in so many settings. Wouldn't have been an issue a few years ago as Roman with an M was quite rare then. Well it's ubiquitous now.

TenThousandSpoons · 07/04/2022 21:40

I like Ezra best. Very cool.
Finley has had its day.
Rowan is drippy.
The middle names are both nice.

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/04/2022 21:40

Rowan Jude

DramaAlpaca · 07/04/2022 21:35

I really don't like Ezra or Elijah and I prefer Rowan for a girl.

Which leaves Finley Jude, which is very nice.

Frenchie15 · 07/04/2022 21:33

Interesting! Thanks everyone. I’m not sure I love Jude enough to use it as a first name.

saritapdot · 07/04/2022 20:03

I think Ezra Jude is the nicest

WinterCarlisle · 07/04/2022 19:57

Rowan is lovely but I agree with @NuffSaidSam that Jude is too good for a middle name!

KylieCharlene · 07/04/2022 19:56

Sorry but I much prefer Elijah Jude.

NuffSaidSam · 07/04/2022 19:54

Lovely list!

I absolutely love Rowan and Jude.

I love Finn too. Ezra is nice. Less keen on Elijah.

I'd go with Jude Ezra or Rowan Ezra because Jude is too good to waste as a middle name imo.
