We are almost settled for this name for our baby boy. Any thoughts? I love both the greek mythology and the geography meanings

I agree, @SoupDragon. Not many names are ridiculous but someone should like their own name, and it would be nice to think that parents could bear in mind that an amusing name might not be fun for their child

What I see on here are a strong focus on first and middle names, when it is the first name and surname are likely to be used. (Harry Edward fine Harry Edward Potter not fine, Felicity Belle not too bad, Felicity Belle Enderby - way too bad)

@FayCarew

Why do people on name threads post ‘as long as you like it that’s all that matters’ ?

Because it's more polite than 'I don't like it' or 'It's awful'

It's not "all that matters" though. It is the child who has to live with a ridiculous name, not the parents.
Purpleroseas · 10/04/2022 14:26

I like Atlas - easy to say and spell.

Another no here as well.

thingymaboob · 10/04/2022 14:01

@WeasilyPleased

Lone voice here. I think it's pretentious and daft. Sorry.
Agree. I would definitely eye roll if a parent introduced their child "Atlas". Awful and pretentious
RandomQuest · 10/04/2022 13:59

I used to drive a VW Atlas when I lived in the states. Great car. Awful baby name though.

YouLookinSusBro · 10/04/2022 13:56

Dreadful, sorry

NewandNotImproved · 10/04/2022 13:53

Why do people on name threads post ‘as long as you like it that’s all that matters’? That’s not what matters at all, obviously it’ll be the person who’ll have the name for 8-ish decades that matters.

Crunchymum · 10/04/2022 13:48

It is my cats name Blush

ThirdElephant · 09/04/2022 19:56

No from me. I have a shelf of them in my classroon and to me it'd be akin to naming your kid Dictionary or Thesaurus.

Yogagrandmum · 09/04/2022 19:55

Hahaha

Kittykatmacbill · 09/04/2022 19:54

No from me I would assume you were Ann rand fans.

midsomermurderess · 09/04/2022 16:29

On 'shortenings'', who needs to shorten a 2-syllable name? I don't mind it. So what if he turns out to be skinny. There must be lots of girls called Evie, Tilly, Milly, Emily who wont grow up to be frilly and dainty. You tend to grow into and sort of become your name.

DrDetriment · 09/04/2022 15:26

Horrible. He will get called Twatlas.

lemongreentea · 09/04/2022 15:01

Not my taste. How about Aiden?

carefullycourageous · 09/04/2022 15:00

I don't dislike i in terms of sound or anything, but I think it is too big a name for an unknown person to carry. So it is a no from me.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/04/2022 14:58

Love it.

TulipCat · 09/04/2022 14:57

I think only certain people can carry it off and you don't know if he will be able to at this stage. Also not great with very "British" surnames. Atlas Braithwaite is a bit silly.

KirstenBlest · 09/04/2022 14:52

I wouldn't

Nice name for a mountain range

veronicagoldberg · 09/04/2022 12:48

I'm perplexed at the sudden popularity of this name. It's so ugly! Reminds me of "cutlass". The "-tl-" sound is so harsh.

HandlebarLadyTash · 08/04/2022 16:35

Fabulous it is, I wouldn't

FrydayFish · 08/04/2022 16:08

what if he turns out to be on the chubby side instead of an adonis, lots of opportunities for teasing.

Pemba · 08/04/2022 16:04

Sorry but it's ridiculous. *

A big muscly mythological man, or a book of maps (every home should have one). Not for a baby, or indeed a young man living in the UK.

  • in Greek culture it might be perceived differently.
peaceinourtime · 08/04/2022 00:09

It's nice. The only Atlas I know of is a dog. Also he better good with directions else that sets it up for nicknames not pleasant such as Atlas needs an atlas to get around/find where he is or Atlas' atlas isn't working.
