Jemima

What do you think of Jemima? Not fan of Gemma and don't care about the Aunt Jemima thing. Would it be wrong to use if not Jewish?

What other names could you suggest that I might like.

Amdone123 · 05/04/2022 01:01

I love it.

AlwaysLatte · 05/04/2022 00:41

Love it!

It's a good name, not overused but recognised and there aren't lots of alternative spellings.

Other names of a similar ilk include Delilah, Keziah, Miriam or Susannah. I know a handful of girls with those names (and one Jemima), none of them is Jewish.

purpleme12 · 05/04/2022 00:13

I really like it
You can have good nicknames from it too

I named my child a lovely name that's not very popular (but not out there either). But her friends seem to shorten it to a really popular name that's very normal. I'm not a fan

Buttercup54321 · 05/04/2022 00:06

Puddle duck.

midsomermurderess · 04/04/2022 11:30

I like it too. There's a character in the tv series ,The Night Manager, called Jemima, nn Jed.

demoness · 04/04/2022 10:49

I've never liked it personally but I think it's an acceptable name. It's an Anglicised Hebrew name from the Bible, no different from James or John, so I don't see why it would be "wrong" for you to use it. The actual Hebrew form is Yemima (pronounced yeh-mee-ma), which has a very different sound.

Grumpasaurusrex · 04/04/2022 10:35

It's beautiful, strong and classy.

WeasilyPleased · 03/04/2022 23:04

It's a gorgeous name.

TheArtfulBlogger · 03/04/2022 19:45

Lovely name

Feeellostindirection · 03/04/2022 19:44

Can't hear that name without thinking of the rhyme 'oh Jemima look at your Uncle Jim......' but this won't be an issue with newer generations I'd have thought

ApocalypseCow · 03/04/2022 18:50

Jemima is my absolute favourite girls name. I only have boys so have never been able to use it. Please call your baby Jemima .

Hadtocomment · 03/04/2022 18:36

I like it. I like names that have a bit of character to them and this seems to fit the bill for me.

polkadotpixie · 03/04/2022 18:03

I really like it. A friend's daughter is called Jemima and they're Muslim so I don't think it matters if you're Jewish or not

eddiemairswife · 03/04/2022 17:58

It is a doll's name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/04/2022 17:46

It’s nice, albeit a bit twee - and fine to use for anyone. People in the UK would think Beatrix Potter if anything.

I’d think of Tabitha, Eloise, Clementine, Eliza, Lucy, Polly, as similar sweet children’s book type names. I possibly wouldn’t want to be called them as an adult..

RuthW · 03/04/2022 17:40

Lovely

cptartapp · 03/04/2022 17:07

Babyish

celestebellman · 03/04/2022 17:00

Not really keen, though I do know 2, neither Jewish so would not think of that as an issue.
Makes me think of Puddleduck, and possibly a cow's name.

Abracadabra12345 · 03/04/2022 16:56

My friend named her baby Jemima and she’s as adorable as her name!

BluebellsGreenbells · 03/04/2022 16:55

I love it too! DH said no.

beans1992 · 03/04/2022 16:53

I love it.

Sidneysussex · 03/04/2022 16:50

It's a traditional name and thus biblical as are Elizabeth, Rebecca, Rachel, Sarah, Eve, Mary, Martha etc etc . Used traditionally by both Christians and Jews. Or just anyone who likes the names!
I assume Puddle duck came from a more Christian assumption being a Victorian English story.
It's beautiful and amazingly under used. Has a slightly posh vibe still.
