I generally like Shakespearean girls names, but not overfond of Cordelia, I think of corduroy, cordial, apple cores etc and I just don't find the sound that pleasing. Then there is the tragic daughter in King Lear and the annoying little sister in Brideshead Revisited.

So I'd go for the more classic Elizabeth, with multiple nice shortenings to choose from.

Elizabeth it's my favourite name on my girls baby name list. I love how you there's so many nick names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/04/2022 13:31

Elizabeth is gorgeous providing it's pronounced properly. I heard a Lizbiiiiiiiiii being called the other day. I thought if you're going to use a name at least be able to pronounce it.
I'm not over keen on Cordelia. However I do like Cora and Delia

urbanbuddha · 02/04/2022 03:51

Elizabeth.

MenopauseSucks · 01/04/2022 22:48

I love Cordelia as I thought she was a great character in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'!

(Not everyone's choice but there you go!)

Her nickname was Cordy which is great.

nocoolnamesleft · 01/04/2022 22:44

Cordelia. She's a very strong female character in one of my favourite series of books.

Jemimapuddleduk · 01/04/2022 22:42

Love Delia so it has to be Cordelia but I’d just go with Delia. Me and dd have Elizabeth as middle names and I love the name but it’s a bit meh as first name.

seriousandloyal · 01/04/2022 22:26

Elizabeth x

TabithaHazel · 01/04/2022 22:04

I love Cordelia, it's just such a beautiful name and great nicknames too - Cora, Coco, Cory, Lia etc. Elizabeth is a nice name too, but a bit mundane compared to Cordelia.

Linnet · 01/04/2022 21:21

Cordelia

delshell · 01/04/2022 21:12

Really like both. Cordelia nn Corrie is lovely

@gingerhills

I prefer Elizabeth. I love how varied the diminutives are, so you can find one that really suits the girl's personality: Liz, Lizzie, Liza, Eliza, Beth, Betty, Libby etc. It's a wonderful name.

I like Cordelia but associate it too heavily with King Lear - such a bitter, sad story, even though she is the heroine. And I'm not wild about the "Cor' sound.

No need for anyone to use an abbreviation if they don't want to. My close relative named Elizabeth won't stand for having her name shortened in any way, never did, from babyhood on.

Currently reading the second P. D. James book about Cordelia Gray, as it happens. Brilliant character.
