Hi All, would love to know what people think of this name and if there’s any other similar type ones which we might like. Quite like 2 syllables and traditional. Know that isn’t to everyone’s tastes but I’ve got 2 already and would like them to sort of “go” 😊

I think Martha is so pretty. But also a strong name … I don’t like ‘babyish’ names that don’t grow with you into adulthood.
The Martha I know has a sister called Grace

alexdgr8 · 01/04/2022 03:31

sounds like a scullery maid to me.
not keen.

I like the vintage vibe but not the sound.

It makes me think of the biblical kitchen drudge and the hand maids tale, so no.

I have a Martha. Still absolutely love the name. As a pp said, it's cute when they're little and then ages well as they grow up.
She's the only one in her year at school but we do know another. Most importantly, she likes her name.
We (immediate family) call her Marf as a jokey nickname but no one else seems to shorten it.

Its my favourite name. I love the Tom Waits song its gorgeous.

mamaduckbone · 31/03/2022 22:56

Lovely name! It would have been on my girl list only it sounds ridiculous with our surname.
Ds1's first love (when he was 4!) was called Martha and she was a lovely little girl. Smile

floofycroissant · 31/03/2022 12:50

Always loved it, Handsmaids Tail has dampened it a bit. How about Lotta or Margot

CurlyBurley · 31/03/2022 12:29

Love the name Martha Star

@Fivebeanchilli How funny - I have a Martha and a Lydia! Grin

I have a Martha! I get lots of (seemingly genuine) compliments on her name. I’m not a fan of particularly ‘girly’ or infantilising names for girls. To me it sounds strong and feminine and classic. Not easy to shorten and not overused - I don’t know any other Marthas. She has never been called Marf!

@PestorPeston

Martha gets shortened to Marf, which is not to everyone's taste.

I think it’s lovely. I have an Esther and if I’d had another DD she would have been Martha, Matilda or Ada.

ButterRose · 31/03/2022 10:45

I don't love it but it's not terrible it's just 'nice' imo

My favourite name and I've used it! Never heard 'marf'

Brunonono · 31/03/2022 08:54

Love it! Was on my list and I think it's a really strong name that's perfect through from being a baby to old age Smile

BuffyFanForever · 31/03/2022 08:40

Thanks all, completely get it isn’t a very girly/ fairy Princess name but I can’t see a daughter of mine being particularly graceful so think that’s fine 😂

@KirstenBlest muffins?! No idea what that’s about but like to eat them lol.

@DramaAlpaca

Get your bingo card ready... to me it's dreary and frumpy. Sorry.
No, you're not.

Why bother? You don't have to apologise for holding an opinion.

RoseMartha · 30/03/2022 19:26

I like it

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 30/03/2022 19:26

Absolutely love it.

There is a fantastic French legend about the biblical St Martha slaying or taming (depending on the source) a dragon in Tarascon.

MarthanotMarfa · 30/03/2022 19:25

I too have a Martha. It’s never, ever been Marf or Marfa. Neve been shortened or given a nickname. Universally liked in my experience by her generation and ours. Lovely for an adult and a child and classless. I am biased though!
