Hi all I'm just after your first thoughts when you see the girls name Mazel or Mazelle and how would you pronounce it without looking it up? Mai-zel or Mar-zel or something different?? I like the meaning and the nn mazie but I'm unsure if the name is to out there

To rhyme with Hazel.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 31/03/2022 08:53

Interesting like a pizza topping?. Or that's mozzarella sorry!!

Marzella is lovely and not a made up name as some suggested. I would not do Mazel on its own personally and yes thought Mazel Tov the moment I saw it.

Personally I think Maisie is dull and Marzella far more interesting.

SylvanianFrenemies · 31/03/2022 07:32

First thought is Mazel (Tov). But I think most people would pronounce it to rhyme with Hazel. It's ok.

How about May? I know someone called May who gets nicknamed Maisie.

MrsMigginsCat · 31/03/2022 07:32

My first thought was, 'Is that even a name?' and my second was, 'If it is it's horrid.' Don't do it OP. If you like Maisie, which is a lovely name, call her that.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 31/03/2022 07:26

@INeverKnewYa

First thought is: Mazel Tov

Good luck

Yes me too. MAH-zl pronunciation. With -elle that would change to mah-ZELL.
Pamlar · 31/03/2022 07:14

In hebrew the name is said Mazaal with emphasis on last syllable.
English speakers tend to pronounce it muzzle. Which is not pretty to my ears.
If you like the pronunciation to rhyme with Hazel then would you consider spell it Mayzel?

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/03/2022 01:08

It’s not a name is it?

People will mishear as Mabel anyway so call her that

Madrenetterhere · 30/03/2022 22:42

My initial pronunciation was mar-zel
My second thought was mazel tov
My third thought was I hope you don't name your child this. Lol.

nutellingyou · 30/03/2022 22:24

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel was my first thought.

WeasilyPleased · 30/03/2022 22:13

Mayzel as in The Marvellous Mrs.

mathanxiety · 30/03/2022 22:09

Maisie is a very sweet name and I think it would be fine on a BC.

You could have a more formal middle name - Maisie Olivia, Maisie Elizabeth, Maisie Frances, etc.

If you like the sound of Maisie, how about Daisy?

Playdoughcaterpillar · 30/03/2022 21:10

My first thought would be that's not a proper name. Poor child. There are so many actual real names. Just choose one of those.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 30/03/2022 21:07

Mazel rhymes with Hazel. But on speaking it aloud I find I drop into a Zummerzet accent and start wittering about mangelwurzels.

cttd1 · 30/03/2022 20:59

It sounds Italian or reminds me of a cheese

DogsAndGin · 30/03/2022 20:57

First thoughts: Polish name

RuthW · 30/03/2022 20:49

I would say maz-elle

Never heard it before.

cafedesreves · 30/03/2022 20:00

How about Dalia? Also Hebrew origin meaning destiny or fate. Very pretty IMO

Cisforcamel · 30/03/2022 18:45

I’d think wtf can’t parents just give their kid a normal name with a normal spelling and without the quadrupled barreled surname.
Just no.

DiscoBadgers · 30/03/2022 18:41

Honestly I would think you were someone who had misspelled Mabel or Hazel.

It’s terrible.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/03/2022 18:39

Makes me think of cooking oil, sorry 🥴

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/03/2022 18:38

May-Zell. My first thought would be that you had tried to merge two names, one of them being Hazel. I wouldn't have thought of mazel-tov

Nelliephant1 · 30/03/2022 15:22

Mazel tov

Coronado2 · 30/03/2022 15:22

@Vampirethriller

Ma Zell
This is how I'd say it too
demoness · 30/03/2022 15:16

Mazel just makes me think of Mazel Tov. I think it could be an awkward name to have. I don't think Jews would necessarily find it offensive but they might find it strange.

Maisie is very popular as a name in its own right nowadays. I don't think it's weird in the same way that Bob or Kath on the birth certificate would be.
