Thought I had my heart set on Rory but kind of like the name woody.
Not sure if I'm cool enough for a unique name Grin my girls are izzie and Lilly so not unusual just wondering if it'll go? Or if that even matters Confused

Awful

Buttercup54321 · 29/03/2022 19:15

Woodpecker
Toy story

CodLoverOil · 29/03/2022 10:45

I know a Howard whose nickname is Woody. Only used with Close friends and family, professionally and officially he's Howard.

@NurseBernard

Tell us about the time you pulled 250,000 people to Brighton Beach *@Iamthewombat*
Are you Zoe Ball? Why the desperation to defend the honour of Quentin (‘Norman’) Cook?

Do you realise that (1) it is possible to be cool without ‘pulling 250,000 people to Brighton beach’, (2) cool is subjective and not everybody has to agree with you and (3) I made no claim to be personally cool. That doesn’t stop me from forming opinions about the coolness of Norman Cook and Zoe Ball, and rightly so. I’ve never won an election personally, but I still make decisions on who to vote for. That’s how it works.

Margaretmatcher · 29/03/2022 08:53

I cannot believe you are serious it is an erect penis, but you know that and god knows how much teasing your son will get. Choose something that will not get him bullied

FishFingerSandwiches4Tea · 29/03/2022 08:49

@Greatoutdoors

I love it. Edward nn Woody for me. But then I have a son called Will 🤷‍♀️
I would also have Edward and use the nn Woody. But then I prefer longer official names so that the child has an element of choice in their preferred name once older.
PartyPlan · 29/03/2022 08:45

How about Rudy as an alternative? It’s the same sound but not as erectiony.

NurseBernard · 29/03/2022 08:42

Woody is awful. Rory is much nicer.

ButterRose · 29/03/2022 08:37

How about Woodley or Woodson then just give him your preferred nickname

NotTheWomanIWas · 29/03/2022 08:12

Slinky?

@NurseBernard

Zoe and Norman got away with it 20-odd years ago because they were the epitome of 90s cool.

I certainly wouldn’t say anything to anyone’s face - but I’d be judging the parents big time.

Eh? Neither of them have ever been remotely cool.

They’d both really like to be, though, which is why they attention-sought by giving their children strange names. Don’t be like them, OP.

Pamlar · 29/03/2022 07:50

I knew a Woody nn for Edward. But everyone even his clients (barrister) called him Woody.
I was use Edward on birth certificate to give him the option of a traditional name.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 29/03/2022 02:20

No it's awful, I don't know anyone called dick or willy either. Last people I know using those nn would have died of old age 20 odd years ago

NurseBernard · 29/03/2022 02:07

Dick is now a very dated nickname for Richard. People called Richard these days go by Rich, Richie, etc. Not Dick.

Willy is a nickname for William, and unless you’re Willy Nelson (who must be 80-odd), you’ll probably opt for Will, Bill, Billy or Liam as a nickname.

Further - Dick and Willy (reminder - they’re nicknames) are slang for penis.

Woody is slang for erect penis.

Forget us irrelevant Mums….

If a 14YO boy is saying don’t do it - don’t do it.

SylvanianFrenemies · 29/03/2022 00:20

Euphemism for erection.
Name of famously dodgy director.
Just no.

Shabtipup · 29/03/2022 00:17

Awful name unless he's a character from Toy Story

Thewindwhispers · 29/03/2022 00:10

@Zonder

I love it. But then I'm a Woody Guthrie fan. I think for other people there might be more negative connections ranging from erections to Toy Story via a paedo film director.
This.

Rory is definitely the better choice! He’ll get teased if you call him Woody.

ScreamingBeans · 29/03/2022 00:04

It's a nickname, not a name.

ozymandiusking · 29/03/2022 00:00

NO!!

WeasilyPleased · 28/03/2022 23:58

Woody is the nn of a friend of ours with the surname Wood. I much prefer Rory.

Lilaclavenders · 28/03/2022 11:05

Penis references aside I do think Woody is a cute, as a nickname. I wouldn't want to have a cute nickname as my only name as an adult.

He could shorten to Wood ?!

mizzo · 28/03/2022 10:14

@Zonder

People saying erection, are you as rude to people called Dick or Willy?

I've just remembered that Zoe Ball and Norman Cook had a son called Woody too. I wonder if people were as rude to them.

Zoe Ball had no qualms about being rude to my friend when they served her a drink so yes if she had asked me when she was pregnant "what do you think of the name Woody?" I would happily say "as in an erection?"

Penis references aside I do think Woody is a cute, as a nickname. I wouldn't want to have a cute nickname as my only name as an adult.

I wouldn't be rude to someone who was actually named Woody, Dick or Willy.

If someone started a baby name thread about Dick though I would definitely point out it means Penis!
