I know a Madeline who is known as Mad

seasidegirl83 · 26/03/2022 13:25

I have a Madeleine, she is 10. She is always Madeleine or Mads as she doesn't like Maddie. She always corrects people who call her it!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 26/03/2022 13:22

Someone in her life, probably several people, will refer to her as Maddie. If that's going to make you clench your jaw in annoyance every time you hear it you should find another name.

LBFseBrom · 26/03/2022 12:43

I have known a couple of Madelines, one particularly well (also Madeleine which is the same really). I think it is lovely to have name that can be shortened or has some sort of nickname, it's friendly. I have a one syllable name and always wanted to be Liz/Beth, Maggie, Nicky or Sue when I was growing up. I don't care now of course but made sure my only child had an ordinary, classic name with a much used diminutive, which he likes.

Laniania · 24/03/2022 20:10

I would pronounce Madeline similar to Caroline, in which case I think you could use Lina as people sometimes used to for Caroline, though whether anyone WILL or not is I suppose a different matter.

pyramidsystem · 24/03/2022 20:03

I know a Madelene and a Madeline professional and neither gets called Maddie. They do sometimes get Mads though

LaMarschallin · 24/03/2022 19:02

Even if you like the shortened form you can't guarantee what people will call someone.
I was given a name suggested by my aunt, something like "Penelope" (but not exactly that, obviously) and everyone liked "Penny" as well.
I'm now "Penny" to everyone except that same aunt who calls me "Pen" which I hate, let alone my parents!

CalonGaled · 24/03/2022 18:55

@SummaLuvin, that was my mother. I'm not called Rebecca or Becky but that was the attitude.

I'm hardly ever called my BC name as an adult.

A close relative also has her name shortened

itstrue · 24/03/2022 18:53

I have a Madeleine. It's never shortened. I also don't like Maddi but it's never been a problem here.

LaMarschallin · 24/03/2022 18:47

it ends up being the childs call, and they may or may not share the same preferences.

This is very true.
Happened when SiL went to university and immediately put the shortened form of her name on her door.
Her parents hated it and had always called her by her full name (their prerogative) and corrected family and friends if they used the shortened form.
Definitely not their prerogative when their daughter and her friends are adults.

merryhouse · 24/03/2022 18:47

@TrashyPanda

All the Madeleines I know use their full name.

Apart from the University college. Magdalene is pronounced as it is spelt - Mag-Da-Leen.

Oh you're just fishing.

Hey, OP, that's a thought: you could shorten it to Maudlin Grin

SummaLuvin · 24/03/2022 18:42

@Desmondo2021

I have a daughter with an unusual (but not wacky) long name when there are several very popular common abbreviated versions. When she was first born a couple people assumed she would be know by the shortened version but I put them straight and not several years later she is only known by the full name and noone ever assumes to shorten it anymore! So yes, use the full version and embrace it!
this is great for you, however, you are lucky your child also prefers the long version. I agree with @toastofthetown in that it ends up being the childs call, and they may or may not share the same preferences.

My sister knew a Rebecca, who hated the long version and always went by Becky at school. But call her house and ask to speak to Becky and her mums response was "there isn't anyone called Becky here, did you want to speak to Rebecca" - tiresome for everyone.

Allaboutthatvase · 24/03/2022 17:35

I think its a really good point about not being able to control what your daughter will shorten it to

My cousin is a Benjamin shortened to a Ben type name and his parents tried very hard to enforce it but once he got older he insisted on Benjy

His parents hate it, but once he was 6+ there was limited they could do.

DogsAndGin · 24/03/2022 17:09

Mimi is a lovely alternative! I think Madeline is a mouthful and will likely be shortened to something

Ariela · 23/03/2022 09:59

I know a Dee aged mid to late 60s I imagine. I only found out recently she's actually Madeline and hated being called Maddie as a child, so got everyone to shorten it further.

whinetime89 · 23/03/2022 09:42

I have a Madeline, never wanted to shorten it... everyone shortens to Maddie :(

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/03/2022 09:29

The only one I know goes by Maddie.

However, just go with the full name to begin with. Your child will soon decide what they want to be called. My name can be shortened and I go by that. My sister’s name can be shortened but she only goes by her full name. My youngest’s name can’t be shortened but doesn’t stop SIL trying. Hmm

WelshyMaud · 23/03/2022 09:01

The thing is, you can't control other people. Madeline will probably get called 'Maddie' or 'Mads' or similar at some point - a teacher, childminder, relative etc. You can correct them but you won't stop it.

We loved Jacob but DH hated Jake so we chose a different name just to save ourselves the years of corrections.

TrashyPanda · 23/03/2022 08:58

AuntDympna · 22/03/2022 20:49

Magdalene is usually pronounced Madalin, but gives the possibilities of Mags, Maggie, Magda, Meg. Does that help?

toastofthetown · 22/03/2022 19:34

I'd pronounce Madeline like Caroline and differently to Madeleine.

Maddiehere · 22/03/2022 19:01

How is Madeline pronounced? I’ve often wondered. As in Caroline or Christine?

Madeline is traditionally Mad-uh-leen where I am in Ireland and Mad-uh-lyne (to rhyme with wine) is now becoming more popular here too. So traditionally like Christine, but sometimes like Caroline now. I guess the pronunciation varies by region.

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 18:23

@Blimecory

How is Madeline pronounced? I’ve often wondered. As in Caroline or Christine? I only know Madeleine, which is lovely.
Madeleine and Madeline sound like Mad-uh-lyn
Kite22 · 21/03/2022 21:15

If you really dislike the usual shortening, then think of a different name, as you might be able to "correct" people for the first 5 years or so, but after that it will be up to her.
