I loved both. Hubby veteod one and my daughter's name is the other ☺️. We live in NZ where neither is common.

I met a lovely lady Sorcha the other day on a side tangent.

ClinkeyMonkey · 24/03/2022 23:36

Orla. Definitely. Beautiful name.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 24/03/2022 22:54

@Rathmobhaile

The only way I've heard Deirdre being pronounced is as a pp "Deer - draa". I've only heard it pronounced deir - dree on coronation street.
That’s interesting! I’ve only heard Deer-dra on American tv shows, I didn’t realise it was universal, you live and learn!

I still can’t imagine a different pronunciation of Orla though, everyone who is spelling it phonetically still sounds the same to me. Pretty name anyway 😊

Mountainbear · 23/03/2022 21:05

Norah is beautiful - prefer it with an h

Deir dru.

Is it just me but I can only think of one way to pronounce Orla? Those saying pronounce is Awla or Orr-la sound the same to me. Same with the person who mentioned pronouncing Deirdre as Dier-dree, how else would you pronounce it. Not being snarky, just can’t hear the difference!

Nora is lovely!

I suppose Orla sounds more like 'oar-lah' and Deirdre would be 'dear-dra' in my accent (Irish).

I like Nora but I do hear Nitty Nora in my head. I also think of oral gel for Orla though...

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/03/2022 13:53

Both are lovely but Orla is my vote

M0rT · 22/03/2022 21:27

Like them both, I know who Nora Batty is but your average 30 year old won't instantly think it when they hear Nora.
So this babies peers parents/teachers won't have a strong association and terrestrial tv will probably be gone by the time they start secondary.
I have an aunty Nora, who was christened Honora if you like that OP?

beachcitygirl · 22/03/2022 21:22

Orla. Nora makes me think Nora Batty

Gowithme · 22/03/2022 21:20

Orla, but if Nora then definitely spelt Norah.

Candycats · 22/03/2022 21:19

I love both! But as a PP said, personally I would spell it Norah.

ellecf21 · 22/03/2022 20:57

Love Orla! Both are nice though, Orla just feels a bit more modern.

axolotlfloof · 22/03/2022 10:10

Love Nora.
DS and I are watching upload with Nora in. DS would think it was a perfectly normal name and has never heard of Nora Batty.
If you don't live in Holmfirth, go for it.

SabiRiver · 22/03/2022 10:06

I much prefer the name Orla. When is your baby due?

FolkSongSweet · 22/03/2022 09:44

Yes Nora, because Awla is rubbish.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/03/2022 14:11

Orla. I used to know an Orna, which I think I prefer.

FayCarew · 19/03/2022 14:09

Orla is ok in an irish accent, and Norah is nicer than Nora

Blondefancy · 19/03/2022 14:05

Orla is lovely! I used to have a friend called Nona 😊 I prefer that to Nora I think!

FayCarew · 19/03/2022 14:04

Orla, but I'm not keen on either

RedRobin100 · 19/03/2022 13:52

Sorry can’t help I like both. As PPs say would depend on locality and accent.

My friends 4 year old is Nora. Really suits her and is not frumpy un the slightest

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/03/2022 13:49

Nora is beautiful and anyone under 20 will have no clue who Nora Batty is.
Nora Jones?
Orla pretty common in kids where I am.

Noa
Nina
Nula
Nia

DramaAlpaca · 19/03/2022 13:42

Orla, as long as it's pronounced correctly which OP says it will be.

Not Nora, it's so ugly and frumpy. Someone upthread described it as fresh and modern but to my ears it's the opposite.
