Girls names, uncommon

Floomobal · 11/03/2022 09:07

We are a couple of weeks away from the birth of our first baby. Ideally we wanted a name that isn’t made up, people will recognise and be able to spell, but they will be the only one in their class. I’ve been looking at the ONS data, and would love a name that has less than 100 babies born last year with the name.

We have a perfect boys name, but are really struggling for girls names. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Out of interest, what's your boy's name?

greenteafiend · 20/03/2022 02:43

Paloma
Cosima
Esther
Lorna
Carmen

I do like it though, pretty name. But I don’t think it’s that usual/common amongst children.

Kanaloa · 20/03/2022 02:29

@ukborn

Goodness some of these names are pretty common. I don't think there's been a year that both my kids haven't had a 'Sarah' in their classes for example. And there are four Emma's in my extended family. The top 100 names are published every year aren't they? Just look at last few years and avoid them. All four of my kids have normal but uncommon names - no other child with their names in the whole school. We didn't set out for that to happen (two are my step children so obviously no input there), just the way it is.
I’d be really surprised to meet a little Sarah nowadays. Emma is popular in my area though, and Emily/Emmy etc as well. To me Sarah is more likely to be a preschool teacher than one of the kids!

Just to warn you DC1's name was in the 300s or so when we named them, but fast forward 5 years later and it is well into the top 100!

How about Cordelia, Lucinda, Calluna, Dahlia or Beatrix?

IWasFunBeforeMum · 17/03/2022 22:28

My DD is Harriet and we've not met another yet. Not saying it's uncommon but not loads of them.

Echobelly · 17/03/2022 22:23

Colette
Claudine
Anna (no one seems to use it anymore)
Daphne
Nadia
Sylvia

KayEmAy · 17/03/2022 22:20

That summary is exactly how I describe my ideal names as well! Uncommon but not strange.

Some of my favorites -

Bay
Senna
Harley
Raven
Annika
Hailey ( I know it used to be popular but I haven't heard it in a while)
Ace
Camden
Spencer
Demi
Reese
Paige
Annabelle
Petra
Shay
Saylor
Fallon
Felicity
Harlow
Selene
Davina
Braeden
Gia
Bellamy

Some of the names in these suggestions are pretty popular and some really don’t meet the easy to spell criterion.

Rita (51 born last year)
Ruth (67 born last year)
Delia (51 born last year)
Gloria (67)
Jade (61)
Carla (62)

I think those fit the bill. I chose names with fewer than 20 others given the name the year before. Here are some that meet that even more unusual bar.

Nadine (20)
Della (19)
Jane (18)
Bridie (17)
Lorna (16)
Jodie (14)
Cadence (12)
Judy (11)
Thora (10)
Jean (9)
Miranda (8)
Lucinda (7)

Now we are outside the top 3,000

Rosamund
Marian
Lucinda
Yvonne
Jess
Meg
Shona
Wilma
Diane

Backatcha.

If people want to waste their time writing lists for a poster who cba to write her own or even reply, I certainly can’t.

Are you not returning to your own thread @Floomobal ? Hmm

If you were able to give people a steer on which suggestions you like and which your really don't, it might help people know the sort of thing you are after.

Gonnagetgoing · 12/03/2022 23:40

What name have you chosen for a boy? It might help pinpoint what style you like. For example if you’ve chosen Forrest for a boy names like Phoenix, River etc might be your style. However if you’ve chosen Bruce for a boy you’d probably prefer Gloria or something.
