Initials A.S.S...

We're finalizing a name for newborn DS.
Love Bertie, but Albert is the only viable long form name we can agree on.
However, our surname is double barreled, both beginning with S.
So his initials would be ASS.
Is this as awful as I suspect or am I overthinking it?!

What about Peter Ian? That seems to flow quite well. Wink

Donson · 06/03/2022 08:44

Don’t call him Bertie, he’s not a pet...

Donson · 06/03/2022 08:43

These are my sister’s initials. It’s never really been a big deal to her to be honest! I think you’re overthinking maybe, but I see I’m in the minority.

Especially as it’s a donkey in the uk. The initials ‘ARSE’ would be a different story! Grin

Beees · 06/03/2022 08:42

Definitely don't use Albert, you don't even actually like the name you've admitted its just the only longer version you both mind the least. It's one thing to use a name you adore which causes issues with initials but doing so when you don't even love the name is just madness.

Call your child Bertie S S, he may indeed not appreciate having no longer name as he gets older but he will appreciate not being called ASS much more in the long run.

Lurking9to5 · 06/03/2022 08:41

I wouldn't
Gilbert / Bertie would solve this

Hesma · 06/03/2022 08:41

Just call him Bertie, it doesn’t need to be short for something

TokyoTen · 06/03/2022 08:39

No way.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/03/2022 08:36

In every job I’ve ever had and committee I’ve ever been on, actions have been allocated by initials. In a previous job, we had pigeon holes with our initials on.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 06/03/2022 08:34

Dd did a sport (boys and girls) where they had tracksuits with their initials on.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/03/2022 08:34

Gilbert?

oviraptor21 · 06/03/2022 08:30

@Jellybean23

Bertie is quite an endearing name for a baby , not for a teenager and above. He won't thank you in later years.
Hmmm - like Jamie, Harry, Freddie, Robbie ?
NameChangeCity123 · 06/03/2022 08:26

It shouldn't matter but I wouldn't do it. Primary aged kids will be all over that for teasing

Haus1234 · 06/03/2022 08:24

My university email address was my initials and at my current job we sign everything off with initials. You cannot give the poor child the initials ASS and adding a middle name will not help!

I’d rather be Bertie than ASS. Bertie is climbing massively in popularity as a stand-alone name, and with peers called Alfie, Tommy, Teddy, Evie, Millie etc. I don’t love that style of a name as a full name, but they are so popular and have been for years that I’m not concerned about them working for adults.
ncforthisone22 · 06/03/2022 08:23

@Dinoteeth surely it would be RSS Confused

LividLaVidaLoca · 06/03/2022 08:21

We had EXACTLY this and added a second middle. Had to work out if it’d fit on passport forms…

toastofthetown · 06/03/2022 08:20

I didn’t think adding a middle name helps here, because the ASS comes from a first initial and a double barrelled surname. It’s not uncommon for people to use first initial then both surname initials without middle initials coming into it.

Dinoteeth · 06/03/2022 08:11

@viques

Robert wouldn’t really help as then he would be an arse not an ass.
Why would it be Arse? Swapping Albert for Robert would be BSS, or BS if he decides to drop a surname which isn't great.
DropYourSword · 06/03/2022 08:05

Yes. It's awful. Truly. Don't give a child ASS as their initials. Surely you shouldn't have to ask this!

PoniesLove · 06/03/2022 07:56

Don’t!! How about Herbert?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/03/2022 03:38

Obviously he can't have the initials ASS. He'd be dealing with that long after you were dust in the grave.

Albert is a bit boring and predictably 2022. Dare to be different and call him Robert.

caringcarer · 06/03/2022 01:26

Don't do that to him. He won't thank you.

Cattenberg · 06/03/2022 01:26

At secondary school, we had to have our initials embroidered onto our PE skirts. OK, the boys escaped that, but you never know when you might be expected to use your initials. Don’t do it. If your heart is set on Albert, at least add in one or two middle names which don’t begin with R.

Blossom64265 · 06/03/2022 01:16

Don’t do that to a child.

If you like Bertie, just name him Bertie.
