It's enough to make you miss Rhyme Time (a sentence I never thought I'd utter!!)

Wind the bobbin up
Wind the bobbin up
Pull pull clap clap clap

jollyhollyday · 03/03/2022 10:05

Can't believe someone would consider naming their child AJ and then come on and ask how to spell it.....

lemongreentea · 03/03/2022 10:04

no full stops or hyphens in names.

please give your baby a real name. Adam John?

LetHimHaveIt · 03/03/2022 10:02

@Beachsidesunset

4) Arnold Judas

The registrar won't allow any variation of 'AJ', so don't be silly.

Wouldn't be too sure about that. I'm actually fairly certain they will: I've seen 'DKNY' (the label; to rhyme with 'bikini') permitted.'
Susu49 · 03/03/2022 09:59

Definitely "AJ"

When you add in full stops (A.J.) it means you've just written their initials.

I like it, personally, but I'd give some thought to practicalities. I'm seeing an increasing number of website forms that require you to write at least 3 letters for a first name.

I'm really shocked at the class snobbery on this thread - there are plenty of names suggested on other threads which are thought awful by other people but because you dared to use a text shorthand in your post people are piling on.

@SoupDragon

how do you pronounce "Ng"? eng? nuhguh? engee?

I've never heard it pronounced but googled and it seems somewhere sort of between "eng" and "ing"

ah ha! thanks.

not that i know anyone with this name....but still.

CommonPrimrose · 03/03/2022 09:21

@PancakeBae

I think Mumsnet needs to come up with a bobbin icon or a fishing reel icon. Something that indicates a massive wind-up, anyway.

Halllyup17 · 03/03/2022 09:20

Another way, meaning not at all unless it stands for sensible names.

I have taught two children called AJ in different schools in the last couple of years.

@SoupDragon

Also you see Ng quite common as a name,

Isn't that because it is actually a name?

i've only ever seen it written down so never had to say it out loud.

I had to call someone once who's name was spelt (i think ) xioaxi had no idea how to pronounce it. luckily she picked up the phone and said her name. apparently pronounced shaowshi would never have tried that.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 03/03/2022 08:36

How about Ai-Jai...using the 'ai' digraph. Or mix and match...Aigh-Jae? A-e Ja-e (split digraph👍)? Gosh there's so many combinations here...or...

Give your child an actual name? Another (far more sensible) option 👍

SoupDragon · 03/03/2022 08:24
  1. Your child deserves an actual name. Do you think they are only worthy of having initials?
BuyDirt · 03/03/2022 08:15

AJ is dreadful, it’s just initials. Give your lovely baby a name.

Riverlee · 03/03/2022 08:10

I knew an Ajay when I was younger. Also I know someone called TJ (and I did ask when he was born what it was short for). Also you see Ng quite common as a name,

sashh · 03/03/2022 07:39

@Aquamarine1029

You would really do this to your child? They are the one who will be saddled with this nonsense.
I taught a class that had (I'm using the OP's name so changing it) an AJ and an Ay-jay.
collieresponder88 · 03/03/2022 07:34

It's not a name give him him a name like aaran james then nick name aj

KindlyKanga · 03/03/2022 07:27

Don't use punctuation in their name.

Ajay or give them two proper names with the initials A J.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 03/03/2022 07:23

From a practical viewpoint, having punctuation symbols in a name could make it awkward when typing it into forms that aren’t geared up for them. I remember a colleague whose surname began with O’ having problems with that on occasion.

Just had a flash back to the 90s when sending messages on my Nokia 3210 and trying to cut my word count down on a txt message by abbreviating absolutely everything to the point the message barely made sense.

KloppsTeeth · 02/03/2022 23:28

@Luredbyapomegranate

Please don’t register your child as AJ, like a low rent Elon Musk.
This. Letters instead of a name is dreadful. Ajay is fine. AJ or any variant of that as a legal name is going to cause a lifetime of issues for the child, who will be an adult much longer than they are a child.
Shtfday · 02/03/2022 23:24

Not keen on 1 to 3
Anotherway is really unique through. Maybe official name and then shorten to other
