Brother in law being a prick about name

Fezcoh · 28/02/2022 12:02

My brother in law is being a total arsehole about the name we chose for DS, every time he says it he pulls a face and says it cringes him to say, when we first told him the name he said he refuses to call him it and will just call him Sam, which isn't remotely similar and he has a few instances said things like "Sammy boy' and it's really hurtful to be honest he won't say his actual mame without pulling a face and it just seems to be constant jokes and rudeness, calling him the American dream etc. It's not an offensive name at all, it's Brody, and I don't think it warrants this strong a reaction. Yes it is a little bit American, also has Scottish connections, yes we are English. I'm just starting to get a complex about it now, I know not everyone will like a name but to be some outwardly rude?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
HadEnoughOfBears · 28/02/2022 22:49

@MaryStuart

Call him Uncle Knobhead
🤣😜
ChazzaGirl · 28/02/2022 22:42

@RandomMess

Start referring to him as "Uncle Prick" to his face?
Agree!

Brody is a lovely name, ignore your dickhead BIL.

RightOnTheEdge · 28/02/2022 22:39

You need to tell him straight to stop being such a nobhead and grow up!
He has no problem being rude to you so there's no need to worry about his feelings.

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

Your ds needs an entire wardrobe of personalised outfits.. And a blanket. And a T shirt for bil.

I am Brody's uncle.

I love this
TabithaTittlemouse · 28/02/2022 22:26

Brody is a gorgeous name!

WeasilyPleased · 28/02/2022 22:23

I love the idea of a T shirt with Brodie's Uncle written on it Grin

MaryStuart · 28/02/2022 22:17

Call him Uncle Knobhead

Tsuni · 28/02/2022 22:10

OP, you need to be assertive. Tell him the next time he makes a negative comment about your son's name, he's getting kicked out of your house (or you'll be leaving if you're at his house).

Tsuni · 28/02/2022 22:06

@Polyethyl

A chum lumbered her child with a terrible name. I said " that's a terrible name, I'm going to use your child's middle name instead." No dramas.
Is this a joke reference I'm not getting? Or are you actually bragging about your rudeness?
VeganVampire · 28/02/2022 17:22

I would use Uncle Dickhead, and then blame Peter Kaye - it's what I did when I accidently used it within earshot!

girlmom21 · 28/02/2022 17:13

Is he your husbands brother or your siblings husband?

thinkhorsesnotzebra · 28/02/2022 17:09

Brody is a lovely name.

I have been the Aunt in this situation, my BIL & SIL gave our nephew a ridiculous name, a name that is more commonly associated with animals. Then a few years later they gave our niece an equally daft name.

They deliberately chose 'out there' names - would not consider anything in top 1000 names for the last decade when they were looking. I secretly think it is all rather pretentious.

BUT ..... When we were introduced to them and told their names we made all the appropriate noise about how gorgeous each baby was (totally true) and just did not comment on the names because it is totally their decision.

Your BIL is a wanker and I would tell him so in no uncertain terms and refuse to use his name until he paid your son the same courtesy

VivX · 28/02/2022 16:36

Brody is a fabulous name - nit that that has anything to do with it.

Agree with PPs that your BIL is being a bit of a twat and definitely start calling him by some other name until he gets the message.

DameHelena · 28/02/2022 16:32

'You don't have to like his name, but please stop commenting on it and calling him the wrong name. You've made your point.' and move on.

What a twunt.

Jvg33 · 28/02/2022 16:07

Why isn't your DH saying anything? My mum and brother started to call my little girl a nickname they chose to annoy my DH. I soon stopped that bs.

Jvg33 · 28/02/2022 16:06

@RandomMess

Start referring to him as "Uncle Prick" to his face?
Agreed.
forrestgreen · 28/02/2022 15:56

Uncle dick

SatinHeart · 28/02/2022 15:36

Just address BIL as Derek/Norman/Nigel/Trevor or similar (no offence to any of those btw) every time he does it until he works out it's not acceptable behaviour

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/02/2022 15:32

I’m really hoping you aren’t serious. If you are, you are really fucking weird, as well as rude.

But anyway, OP - just remind him it’s your baby, this is his name, not calling him by his name is unbelievably rude - so either he starts using it, or he’s not welcome anymore. Obviously it won’t come to that but it’s the kind of rudeness that can continue if you don’t nip it.

Itsbackagain · 28/02/2022 15:24

Not the point but I only know Brodie as a surname in Scotland and only 1 person at that.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 28/02/2022 15:18

Brody is a fine name but not really American.

dottydodah · 28/02/2022 15:12

What on earth gives people the right to be judge/jury on others peoples names ? Tell BIL to grow up .I have friends children whose name I wouldnt have chosen .However I am an adult and pass no comment! Nothing to do with me!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 28/02/2022 15:04

MemoryLikeASieve1 · 28/02/2022 15:01

My husband is called Brody!
He has never has anyone comment on his name, obviously I am bias but I love the name!

stripeyflowers · 28/02/2022 15:00
