What are your favourite international baby names for boys and girls. Love love love Maria but it's the most used name globally and that's put me off a bit.

@Helenluvsrob Nah Idris Alba plus we know someone called Ibra ... too similar IMO

Can you narrow down from international? After Maria, Anna is the most common name for girls. Hannah or Hanna is easy, too. Emma Olivia Matilda Sofia, Variations of Elizabeth: Elisabeth, Elise, Isabel, Elsie, Bella, Belle, Elisa, Eliza, Isabella, Isobel, the Scottish Ailsa, the Icelandic Ellisif, or the Hungarian Erzsebet.
Alexandra, Alessia, Alejandra

Paloma? Carmen? Anja?

Carl/ Karl/ Charles/ Kaarlo for a boy.
Marcus.
Kai also in Scandinavia, China or Hawaii.
Boris (sorry)
John, Johan, Jack, Johannes
Niko, Nikos, Nicholas, Nicholaus
@YupNameChangeAgain i just double checked to not offend anyone but also variations of patrick in russian chech and polish plus more options.

paul has even more international variations
Well Patrick is a saint so would be all over the Christian world in some form I’d imagine.

Anna, Alexandra… boys are harder? But I guess Peter and Leo are in a lot of places in some form.

Unless you are in a very RC bit of the world OP I wouldn’t think Maria was that overused?

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 27/02/2022 08:20

Saskia?

And Ivan for a boy!

Am intrigued by people’s ideas of what constitutes “international”

Are we saying Christian names in a western language … even if it can have multiple variations that make them unrecognisable , one from the other ?

Let’s take George for example -
Turns into Jorge in Spain
Georgio in Italy
Jorn for scandi
Yorgi or Gorgi further east

Are these names really the same amd internationally known ?

I am guessing asia and Africa don’t count

KirstenBlest · 27/02/2022 13:29

@YupNameChangeAgainn - it's Giorgio in italian, Giorgos in Greek: Arabic: Girgis; Basque: Gorka; Bulgarian: Georgi; French: Georges; German: Georg, Jörg, Jürgen, Jörgen; Georgian: გიორგი (Giorgi); Danish: Jørgen; Estonian: Spanish and Portuguese: Jorge; Italian: Giorgio; Catalan: Jordi; Lithuanian: Jurgis; Norwegian: Jørgen, Georg; Dutch: Joris, Sjors; Hungarian: György; Polish: Jerzy; Portuguese: Jorge, (Yury), Yegor; Slovak: Juraj; Swedish: Göran, Jörgen, Örjan, Georg; Czech: Jiří; Finnish: Jyrki, Yrjö.

Many languages don't have the J sound so would struggle with George, so it's not really international

Something like Andreas would work in a lot of european countries

babyjellyfish · 27/02/2022 13:38

Hugo is used in most European languages.

YupNameChangeAgain · 27/02/2022 15:33

Internationally accepted is now any name that’s Christian even if it’s widely different country to country within Europe ?

KirstenBlest · 27/02/2022 20:09

@YupNameChangeAgain, I wouldn't say so. I suggested Andreas because it is phonetic, so shouldn't cause much problems

Something like Adam is fairly 'international' as it is muslim, jewish and christian.

timoteigirl · 27/02/2022 20:44

@YupNameChangeAgain, I wouldn't think Christian/ biblical names are truly international although widespread. For example there are countries where name Adam is not common. And many African countries use a wider range of Biblical names than here, for instance.
