Boys name help! If I like…

Expecting a little boy and DH and I are struggling! Middle name will be either William or Jack (or both) and surname is short, one syllable.

We like:

Rufus - not sure if I’m brave enough
Dylan - very popular round here so puts me off

And that’s as far as we’ve got Confused English/Irish background but DH has vetoed Irish names. Not keen on anything very popular, modern (Jaxon etc) or what DH thinks is posh (Tristan/Caspar etc).

We know what we don’t like Grin Help please!

@Caramelcap I really do love Dylan too but I hear it a lot. Two girls I work with have Dylans!

I’m not too keen on Asher but for similar reasons to you and Rufus. Otherwise I think go for it, it’s not too unusual without being too popular.

We're in the same situation:

Dylan - love but is it too common?
Asher - am I brave enough?

Not personally that keen on Rufus (I know someone with that name) but if you like it, go for it. It's not way out there Smile

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 18:14

Welsh Dylan (DULL-ann) is nice but a middle-aged man's name

I've only met one Rufus and he was lovely. He's a dachshund

CharlesChickens · 25/02/2022 17:56

I like Dylan but only if you are Welsh.
Rufus is lovely and works much better with your middle names.

gingerhills · 25/02/2022 17:54

Reuben
Joshua
Samuel
Daniel
Izaac
Henry (Hal)

Thanks all, feel a lot better about Rufus, glad others don’t think it’s too “out there” as has been mentioned.

I realise it’s an old and therefore somewhat traditional name but where I live it doesn’t, and hasn’t ever, registered on the name stats so it is a bit different. I work with children and have never come across it there or personally met anyone with the name. I was worried it may be seen as too quirky or ‘hipster’ round these parts but I actually don’t think I care Grin

Rufus is fabulous.

Why would you have to be brave-it's not really "out there" is it?

I would have a 25yr old one if husband had also liked the name.

Rufus William-love it!

Rufus is lovely, and not too ‘out there’
Other ideas:
Reuben
Jonah

Love Rufus, but it’s definitely as posh as Tristan and Caspar in my book!

Reuben, Russell, Ross, Robin?

Jasper, August, Louis, Angus, Magnus?

Mumofgirls2017 · 25/02/2022 07:47

I like Rufus best, but Dylan is nice too. How about

Don't like Dylan or Judah at all and not keen on Jonah

R names like Roman, Reuben, Rory and Rowan are very popular, and Rufus will blend in

WeasilyPleased · 24/02/2022 22:18

Rufus William is ace.

Hermioninny · 24/02/2022 22:01

@17caterpillars1mouse that’s nice to hear, it’s not a name I’ve come across much and I work with kids. I was expecting more negativity around Rufus for some reason!

I love Judah and Jonah but DH isn’t keen.

Our friends and family are boy heavy so a lot of these names have been used. Middle names are family names but otherwise not something we’d choose so not considering them for a first name.

I never read replies on a name thread before posting so as not to influence my answers.

Quite interesting to see some similar responses!

itsgettingweird · 24/02/2022 19:59

Why not William Jack or Jack William if you like them both?

I like Dylan.

But along those lines what about

Elliot Jack
Oscar William
Daniel William
Lucas William
Reuben Jack

bloominglovelyorange · 24/02/2022 19:54

Miles?

bloominglovelyorange · 24/02/2022 19:53

Rufus is nice enough
What about Otis? Tristan? Austin? Eric? Ellis?

I also like an underused classic like Peter or Richard

Essexmummy88 · 24/02/2022 19:31

Lucas?

User310 · 24/02/2022 19:09

I would defo go for Rufus over Dylan. Dylan has become one of those popular over used names where I live.
