So we're expecting a baby boy in a few months and have been set on the name Jonah for a bit however family and friends don't seem too keen on the name so it's making me a bit uneasy now :(

What do you think of Jonah? It will technically be a JJ as the last name will be Jones too haha.

Bloody love the name Jonah (Superstore fan) but I'm not sure about it with the surname. I'm half thinking it sounds really cool and half it might be awkward. Could he have a middle name?

saleorbouy · 24/02/2022 20:40

"A Jonah brought bad luck"
In a story in the Bible about a Whale that regurgitated him back on the beach, let's not pretend it's a true factual story.
Harry Potter was a wizard doesn't make all Harry's magician's.
It's a bit much to dislike a name because of it's use for a fictional character and their personality traits in a story as a perception of others who bare that name might be.

I mean middle names rarely make an appearance so that could be Kazoo for all the difference it would make to your day to day life, but most people get called by their first and last names pretty much daily I would say.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/02/2022 20:34

let's be honest how often are you actually called by your full name,

er, quite a lot?

saleorbouy · 24/02/2022 20:28

My DS is Jonah and it suits him well. I think that Jonah Jones is fine and let's be honest how often are you actually called by your full name, he'll be Jonah to his friends, Mr Jones at formal meetings and Jonah Jones at the doctor's surgery.

DogsAndGin · 24/02/2022 20:21

Love it, and JJ is really cute

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 24/02/2022 20:07

Its a name I really dont like and as pps have said its meaning just wouldnt leave me. I know a Jonah and his name just never feels right to me - not that it is anything to me, and you need to go with what you like - but you asked for opinions so I thought Id add mine!

narcdad · 24/02/2022 20:01

It's my nephews name and I dislike it.

I always call him Joe 🤣

Sillydoggy · 24/02/2022 20:00

Two J Jones in the house will be a pain with mail when he gets a bit older. I messed up and my daughters have the same initials and it is annoying.

scrivette · 24/02/2022 19:55

Jonah is a great name and I like the sound of Jonah Jones (and Jack Jones).

LordoftheDanceSaidHe · 24/02/2022 19:54

Absolutely love Jonah. Maybe not with Jones though

daisypond · 24/02/2022 19:54

I’d never call a child Jonah. It’s a word in the dictionary. Like Judas.

Tillymintpolo · 24/02/2022 19:52

A Jonah brought bad luck

flutterbean · 24/02/2022 19:50

My son's called Jonah, J for short. I love it.

NewcastleOrBust · 24/02/2022 18:57

I like it. Jonah is a perfectly ordinary name to me.

Jonah Jones and his dad Jack Jones.

Hermioninny · 24/02/2022 18:50

Love Jonah but DH wouldn’t agree. Not sure I’d put it with Jones but each to their own!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/02/2022 13:33

There's a lovely ladat my school who's called Jonah Jones. I really like the name - it rolls off the tongue really easily and sounds great said with a Welsh accent to boot!

Love Jonah ❤️

Don’t discuss with friends and family. It’s none of their business.

octoberfarm · 24/02/2022 13:01

Absolutely love the name Jonah (and my eldest has a name that starts with the same letter as our last name), but I fear Jonah Jones may be a little too close. It's not the J J so much as the "Jon-" "Jon-" - the sounds are just so similar. Sorry OP!

Allsorts1 · 24/02/2022 12:56

I think Jonah Jones is nice! It’s definitely memorable. Jones is a fab last name as really can go with any name.

Lollypop0101 · 24/02/2022 12:55

I see it’s definitely either a love it name or hate it 😬 I found it so hard to pick a boys when I heard Jonah it just stuck with me! Especially since my OH’s name is jack so I like that they both start with a J!

@ChoiceMummy that's funny because my dh was a seafarer and gladly named our son Jonah Confused and we have been on many boats with him and they have had no bad luck so far...

ChoiceMummy · 24/02/2022 12:26

I wouldn't use as wouldn't want my child associated with being bad luck.

A long-established expression among sailors uses the term, "a Jonah", to mean a sailor or a passenger whose presence on board brings bad luck and endangers the ship. Later, this meaning was extended to mean, "a person who carries a jinx, one who will bring bad luck to any enterprise."

CrackerGal · 24/02/2022 12:23

I love it, great name & you don't hear it much. I wouldn't worry about having a J surname either, look at Joe Jonas!

DotDotDotDotDot · 24/02/2022 12:20

I’m not keen on Jonah to be honest. The bad luck association would put me off too (as pp mentioned). Jasper Jones or Jacob Jones would both be great though.
