Oscar?

Second baby boy due in a couple of weeks and we think we are set on Oscar.

I really like it but it seems to be quite a Marmite name. Every time I say it, I have a tiny niggle that it’s not right but we can’t find a name we prefer.

What is your initial reaction to Oscar? I know it was very popular/over done but I’ve never actually met one, so the popularity doesn’t really bother me.

Thanks xx

I love it! I've got three kids in three different school years and still know none so it's not common round here (London)

bloominglovelyorange · 24/02/2022 19:52

@SpicePumpkin we'll see - it's gone from over 4,500 babies born in England and Wales during 2013 called Oscar (which is when the name peaked), to around 3,300 babies called Oscar born in 2020. A massive drop. Looking at the trajectory there will be even less Oscar's in 2021 when the statistics come out . My money is on the name leaving the top 10 next year and there being less than 3,000 - we will see!

FireInCairo · 24/02/2022 12:31

Yes Ozzie is cute

SpicePumpkin · 24/02/2022 00:16

@bloominglovelyorange

I love Max and Oscar

Just looked at the official statistics and Oscars numbers peaked in 2013 and have been declining every year since then. No wonder I don't know any! A good time to pick this name, it'll be outside top 20 soon

It's number 7. I doubt it will be out if the top 20 for another 10 years.
WeasilyPleased · 23/02/2022 23:18

I love it and Max and Ozzie sound really strong!

georgarina · 23/02/2022 17:44

I think it's nice but so common it gets no reaction from me

I don't like it, sorry!
mathanxiety · 23/02/2022 16:05

Oscar is a great international name. I think it goes really well with Maximus thanks to the Irish mythology link.

RuthW · 23/02/2022 15:41

It's nice

catscatscatseverywhere · 23/02/2022 15:27

Oscar is lovely name. I am hoping for little Oscar next year :-)

ellenpartridge · 23/02/2022 14:44

I like it

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 23/02/2022 14:24

I really like it. I used to think Grouch, but it's grown on me hugely.

Never met one, but I know DH had a childhood friend called Oscar, who would be 35 now. Also, there are loads of King Oscars (of Sweden, I think). For that reason, to me it's popular rather than "trendy", if you see what I mean. In a Thomas, Alexander, William, kind of bracket - but a touch more interesting.

Great choice!

Violetandpurple · 23/02/2022 14:22

I really like it.
It was popular when my eldest dd (9) was born but it was on our list if she was a boy.
Still love it now as a potential name for bump but some people keep telling me it's a dogs name.
However I think it's great. Use it.

KylieCharlene · 23/02/2022 14:11

Love Oscar and I think it sits well with Max.

SazCat · 23/02/2022 13:36

Max (or Maximilian) and Oscar were both on our list... but we had 2 girls! I like your choices 😁
@FireInCairo I think you’re right, maybe that’s what’s holding me back. To be honest, he always gets Max (unless he’s naughty) so I was thinking Max and Oscar are more in line with each other
Yeah Max and Oscar go really well

So do Maximus and Oscar

itsgettingweird · 23/02/2022 13:28

I love it too.

Agree it's a great name that ages well as people grow.

I know a few Oscar's but not the case of 2-3 born a year.

More 5 aged between 6 and 18!!!

eddiemairswife · 23/02/2022 13:26

Oscar Wilde.

You've gone really bold with Maximus so for that reason alone, Oscar seems a bit insipid in comparison. I'd be looking for an equally bold name I think

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/02/2022 13:11

My nephew is called Oscar, I wasn't overly a fan at first, I think Oscar the grouch, but it's grown on me

Classica · 23/02/2022 13:08

The name of Fionn MacCumhaill's grandson. So a great provenance.

Namegame5000 · 23/02/2022 13:07

Thank you all. You have reassured me. I think I’m having last minute nerves and just needed to hear that it wasn’t horrendous. We went quite bold with my DS1 name and called him Maximus, so we had quite a few funny looks after he was born.

Wow @Freddie456 3 boys is a lot in one group though! We are currently living up North and all the names around us are quite modern/trendy.

I know quite a few of them! It’s really popular in our school.

It’s not my favourite boys name, personally. It’s ok.
