Honest opinions needed as I’m full of the preggo hormones and don’t know if it’s lovely and unusual or verging on the ridiculous!

OH says he will consider it— our surname is two syllables and quite common— We loved Aurelia previously but because of a certain partying politician it’s off the table.

Is it a step too far?

Arcadia is a place. Aurelia is a person.

PlanetNormal · 20/02/2022 21:05

Arcadia sounds like a 1980s nightclub in Derby. The slightly cooler alternative to the Pink Coconut. Grin

Wellington17 · 20/02/2022 21:00

Arcadia is a massive fire breathing spider

AuntieStella · 20/02/2022 20:24

Et in Arcadia ego

I think it might be a difficult name to live with

Haudyourwheesht · 20/02/2022 20:22

As a teacher (the relevance being that I encounter many unusual names) I would think of Philip Green. I'd probably avoid it. Why not just Cady?

TottersBlankly · 20/02/2022 20:11

Arcades … Slot machine …

Don’t do that to your eventually teenage daughter, OP.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/02/2022 19:56

I actually like it.

I think of it in the literary/Greek mythological sense of an unspoilt idyl. And as a lot of Greek mythological names are popular now, it seems to fit the moment. It’s a Big name though - like Olympia.

I wouldn’t worry about Philip Green - will be long gone from pop culture by the time she is sentient. However I would give her a straightforward middle name, so she has options.
**@poppyrock* and @LimeSupper* oh you’re right! I’m going to blame this one on the hormones too Blush looks like Aurelia is back in the running

@astoundedgoat I was hoping for more classics/lit/musical associations but it seems like it’s giving the opposite idea to everyone else. Sadly! I like your suggestion but it also gives me a-level nightmare flashbacks, sorry but thanks!
Aurelia is beautiful Smile

Happenchance · 20/02/2022 17:47

Aurelia makes me think of orally.

How about Cadia?

LetHimHaveIt · 20/02/2022 17:43

Et in Arcadia ego. I'd avoid it.

Classica · 20/02/2022 17:37

I like Cady though so would find another names that can be a dim of.

Classica · 20/02/2022 17:37

I studied art history so it reminds me of Nicolas Poussin rather than Philip Green. Feeling so cultured Grin

Not a name for a person though.

MorganBrocklehurst · 20/02/2022 17:22

Arcadia is awful even without the Philip Green connection. Cady, whichever way it is pronounced isn't great either. (It also brings to mind Lindsay Lohan's character in Mean Girls)

Am curious about the need for a nickname? I ask because my name is three syllables and my mum was very clear that was my name and it wasn't to be shortened or a nickname used. Also, surely a nickname should be an organic thing that develops naturally rather than being preconceived/planned.

Gusthemouse · 20/02/2022 17:04

Cadi pronounced similar to Cady is a Welsh girls name, it stems from Catrin / Catherine and quite popular amongst my group of friends and their children (44 to a 3month old)

Lovemydoggie · 20/02/2022 16:57

Sorry..awful! Philip Green!!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/02/2022 16:55

Please not Arcadia unless you are Mrs Green

Aurelia is lovely-I know a little one nicknamed Auri

Hasselhoffsheadband · 20/02/2022 16:55

Arcadia is defo Topshop/Philip Green.

Much prefer Aurelia.

I do like Cady though.

Weefreetiffany · 20/02/2022 16:54

Aurelia is much better. Arcadia is a shop isn't it? Or a pokemon.

Not sure about Antigone... sounds like an antibiotic.

Fivebeanchilli · 20/02/2022 16:49

He called her Romy I think.
Arcadia is pretty awful imo - even without the Philip Green thing, it just sounds like an arcade!

astoundedgoat · 20/02/2022 16:48

It's kind of pretty, but I don't like Cady at ALL. When I read Arcadia I think "et in Arcadia ego" (ex Classicist!) or the Arcadia Group and pension fund embezzlement, depending on my humour.

What about Antigone (an-TIG-oh-nee)? If you want a nn for her it could be Tig or Tiggy. It's got that ancient classics vibe you're going for but is a bit more cool?

LimeSupper · 20/02/2022 16:48

I thought it was baby Romy?

poppyrock · 20/02/2022 16:48

Boris called his latest daughter Romy, OP.

MintyGreenDream · 20/02/2022 16:48

Sounds like an amusements at Mablethorpe

Weefreetiffany · 20/02/2022 16:44

Haha well I hadn’t considered the Philip green angle. That definitely gives a yuck factor…

Cady is the nickname I would use, obviously other people can use what they feel comfortable with. Cady pronounced “cay” like “say” and “dy” like “see”

I thought Boris called his latest daughter Aurelia? Would be so happy to learn otherwise though!
