Baby names rejected by French registrars

Apparently in France the registrars have quite a strict set of criteria for baby names and this list has been published as names rejected by them in 2021...

Fraise
Nutella
Anomalie
Titeuf
Prince-William
Bob l'eponge
Excel
Metallica
Asterix
Spirou
CR7
Lucifer
Clafoutis
Manhattan
Anal
Mini-Cooper
Daisygual
Fleur de Marie
Folavril
MJ

Some of them seem quite innocuous to me after hanging out on this board! No Balonz, sadly Grin. I do wonder about whoever tried to register their child under the French version of 'SpongeBob SquarePants'....

The main surprise for me was that I actually think Anomalie for a girl is quite pretty Blush Thank god this pregnancy is a DS or DH might have been overruling me!

Source - quite interesting background on the French rules if Twitter's translate button is accurate! twitter.com/fenarinarsa/status/1493578412279087114

@SpiderinaWingMirror

My friend intended to call her baby daughter Carrie, after her grandmother. Firmly rejected by the registrar as it means tooth decay. Did allow it as a middle name.

In French or English? In English caries means tooth decay. Carrie is a perfectly normal name.

Mummyoflittledragon · 19/02/2022 17:56

Titeuf is a comic / cartoon character, which is obviously why it was rejected. Seems to have lots of attitude, perhaps a bit like Horrid Henry.

Bleuch · 19/02/2022 17:38

Could MJ be because Mary Jane is slang for marijuana? Probably not, but who knows.

WotgunShedding · 19/02/2022 17:28

What if you wanted to call your child a traditional Chinese name (because you are Chinese) or a traditional Norwegian name (because you are Norwegian) etc?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/02/2022 17:20

@Classica

What's banworthy about MJ?
Difficult to spell? Wink
SiobhanSharpe · 19/02/2022 17:09

I think it's a bit cruel to call your kid Anomalie (Anomaly in English).
Desegual is possibly a bit close to Desigual, the designer brand, which also means unequal in Spanish....

SwedishEdith · 19/02/2022 17:08

Clafoutis is gorgeous. But who wanted Prince William?

Michael Jackson?

Don’t think we really have similar rules in the U.K.? Something about no numbers allowed and the registrar can make a decision over stuff they deem offensive? I know someone called KT. Bet they wouldn’t allow similar in France!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/02/2022 17:02

I quite like Titeuf for a cat. Not that I plan on having cats.

Natsku · 19/02/2022 17:02

I'm a fan of naming laws. Some parents don't think beyond the little baby they are naming, and think to them being a school child, a teenager, an adult, and giving them a name that would be appropriate for all those stages.

SoupDragon · 19/02/2022 16:58

I love Bob L'eponge 😂

Equally, I'm pleased for the child that they weren't allowed to be called that.

Aderyn21 · 19/02/2022 16:57

Anyone who tries to call their child Anal should have a visit from social services! Normally I'm not in favour of state interference in peoples personal lives but that list shows how fucking stupid some people are. I wouldn't trust them to water a plant, let alone name a child!

blameitonthecaffeine · 19/02/2022 16:53

Don't see anything banworthy about Fraise? Is it not common to use flowers, fruits, plants etc as names in other languages?

Some of the others though Grin

Do names ever get refused in the UK?

DropYourSword · 19/02/2022 14:39

I kind of like Bob l'eponge!

Classica · 19/02/2022 14:35

What's banworthy about MJ?

35andThriving · 19/02/2022 14:24

On another site I read that Fleur de Marie means virginity.

IShouldBeWriting · 19/02/2022 14:23

I don't think Fleur de Marie is a euphemism. It just wasn't on the registrar's "calendar" (a calendar of saints names maybe?)

UserBotLurking9to5 · 19/02/2022 11:53

@AngelinaFibres

*Fleur de Marie that is
I'm going to be like Gretchen Weiner now trying to make Fleur de Marie mean lu la hu ha
AngelinaFibres · 19/02/2022 11:49

@RaraRachael

I wish they would do this here. Mind you we always have a good giggle going through the list of new pupils coming in to school and try to choose this year's most ridiculous one Grin

Perhaps it's the French equivalent of lady garden, front bottom, foof SmileSmile

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/02/2022 11:44

I wouldn’t call this being strict..

ImInStealthMode · 19/02/2022 11:43

Mini-cooper is excellent. I was once chatting to a group of people we met on holiday, and one of them was quite reluctant to give us his name and I quote 'because then we'd know him' (although he eventually did).

We googled him afterwards obviously, largely due to his secrecy - turns out him and his wife had been rejected by the Swedish courts for trying to call their baby Superman and he was all over the news Shock
