I love the names Mary and Maria but we live near a traveller site and there are quite a few Maria / Marie / Maryanne / Marys old and young and I don't want my DD to have the same name as lots of other DC in her school so I'm trying to make a list of other lovely girls names just in case I decide not to use either. I also like but can't use: Emma, Seren (love but not Welsh and would be a bit weird to use right?), Alice.

So if I like Mary, Maria, Emma, Seren, Alice but I also want a girls name that isn't in the top 100 what names would you suggest? Thanks CakeBrew.

Twas meant to be! Two very beautiful parts of the world. I have a husband of welsh extraction, it's such a gorgeous place.

Marianne
Celine or Selena

If you like Mary and Seren what about Mari?

It's one of the Welsh forms of Mary, pronounced Marry.

There's also Mali (Mally) which is Welsh for Molly.

CaffiSaliMali · 18/02/2022 11:12

I've heard of Steren as the Cornish version of Seren.

Seren is fine to use if you're not Welsh but bear in mind a lot of people will mispronounce it as Sair-un or Serrun.

Cornish and Welsh have the same roots (Brythonic language) and therefore it also means star in Cornish. There endeth your remote learning for today!

I’ve known two Mirens - one Spanish, one from Ireland. Both pronounced it Mih-REN, with the accent on the second syllable. I’ve always thought it a lovely name :-)

Elia is lovely, my niece in Spain has it
