Hi All,

Our DS will be named Asterios due to strong family reasons. Obviously, we are not originally from the Uk and worried if the name will be ok for this country.

I opened another thread asking if Aster would be a nice nn for a boy and it didn’t go well… most said it’s flower and a girls name.

Sooo… back to zero!

Should we just call him Asterios which will be his official name anyway or shorten it?

How does Asterios sound to British people? Too weird? Too long?

Would you shorten it and if yes to what?

Aris is good.

It will sound like London Harris though.

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 19:45

Thanks All!

What about "Aris" as a nn? Would that go well in the UK? Would that be better than the full Asterios?

Anything starting with "ass" is going to be a problem.

Grimupnoorth · 12/02/2022 17:51

Aster is lovely. I wouldnt worry about what people think. Names are so multicultural now that no one blinks when someone is called something unusual.
My son is called Doros as a nickname. We have no heritage but his godmothers family call him that and so it just spread. His long name is very very common.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2022 17:33

I meant very UNusual girls’ name

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2022 17:32

I think Aster is fine as a boy’s nn. It’s a v usual girl’s flower name and it sounds gender neutral like Rowan.

The full name is Ok, but I think you need a nn, and Terry and Rio are appalling.

FolornLawn · 12/02/2022 17:26

In that case, I like it!

Abrakatabra · 12/02/2022 17:22

@FolornLawn No, no you are right. The emphasis is on “Ter”, so AsTERio !

@Abrakatabra

Thanks all!

It’s pronounced as “Asterix” with the ending “Rio”.

So is the emphasis on the first syllable? ASterio rather than asTERio?

I don't think it is worth worrying about nicknames, kids work that out for themselves and frequently seem to end up with the name parents said they'd never use. (Maybe that is the voice of bitter experience.)

I think it is a nice name.

Qwill · 12/02/2022 16:24

Love it, I know three people called this and they have all been great.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/02/2022 16:24

I don’t think you need a nickname. People will learn how to pronounce it pretty quickly once they’re told. I like it.

TatianaBis · 12/02/2022 16:21

As in turf?

Sauvignonblanket · 12/02/2022 15:56

How about Astro as a nickname?

scottishnames · 12/02/2022 15:52

I like Asterios, but if you have to have a nickname, what about 'Star'?

( Asterix also a great character to have for a nickname.)

TatianaBis · 12/02/2022 13:25

I like it but he will inevitably end up as Asterix.

Abrakatabra · 12/02/2022 12:33

Can you clarify how it's pronounced?

ColonelPine · 12/02/2022 12:10

Asterios is a great name. I’ve never heard of it before and I would probably guess it is a Greek name? I’m picturing a dark-haired hunk anyway Smile. I like the nns Terry and Rio too - I love discovering a ‘standard’ name is actually short for something much more exotic!

MrsEricBana · 12/02/2022 12:05

@Bosephine

Asterios is a great name and Aster is a nice nickname. Nothing wrong with flower names for boys- Acer for example.

I think naming your son Asterios and ending up calling him Terry or Rio would be a tragedy.

Agree 100%

BuddhaForMary · 12/02/2022 10:41

Nothing wrong with Aster as a nn, but Rio also works.

pinkhousesarebest · 12/02/2022 10:37

Honestly in my profession I meet the strangest names which become totally normal within minutes. My own children have names unknown in the country we live in. No- one bats an eyelid.

MrsEricBana · 12/02/2022 10:36

I've never heard of it but I like it. I think it could quickly become Asterix but probably a nickname you haven't even thought of will be used. My ds and his friends generally have fairly well recognised names but the nns they have are often not obvious and derived from some combo of their first and of last names, looks, talent or whatever. I think definitely use it, it's good and different.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 12/02/2022 10:34

It’s a nice name, I wouldn’t worry about whether people think it’s weird! So many children are called unusual names now, I honestly wouldn’t worry, it won’t raise an eyebrow in years to come when he’s an adult.

Rio as a shortened name would work really well, if you like it?
