Cora pronunciation?

Think I love the girls name Cora... how is it pronounced / how would you pronounce it as default though?

From looking online, advice seems to vary between CORE-ah (rhymes with flora and dora, where the first syllable is pronounced like apple core); and C-OR-a / Cawr-a (where the first syllable rhymes with for!)

Not sure if this is an accent / regional difference or not... votes please!

Obviously it rhymes with Flora in everyone's accent. But in my Irish accent Flora sounds like flaw-ra.

So Core-a and Caw-ra would be the same sound to me.

Here you go, I'm not making it up. Paw, pore, pour and poor, all sound exactly the same in a London / SE England accent.

From 1:12 on this video - this is how I saw them.

Anyone with this accent will say Flora to rhyme with the sound in this video. For us, there is no other possible way to say it.

I’m Scottish too and would pronounce it to rhyme with Flora. Wouldn’t be half as pretty the other way. It was very nearly DD’s name.

I know a Corra and her name is pronounced C-orr-a
Cora would rhyme with core-a

Think Corra Linn is a waterfall in Scotland

We have a Cora and DH is from Glasgow. He helpfully says "tell her it's pronounced with a D" Hmm.

It rhymes with Flora Smile

I’d rhyme it with Flora.

Why not spell it with a K? Isn’t it from the Greek, like Dora? Kora must be the earlier spelling?

I don't think many would pronounce it Caw-ra. People would see it and think it must rhyme with Flora and Dora.

Erm, but I don't speak with a Scottish accent nor RP, so how is that relevant?

I grew up in London and I can assure you all those words sound the same in my accent.

I’d say core-ah like an apple corer.
I know a Cora and that’s how it’s pronounced.

😂 I'm pretty sure the default here for Flora would be Floe-ra / Flow-ra. Not Flaw-ra. Hence my question!

Core, four, nor, for, floor, sore, saw, draw - they all rhyme.

Rhymes with Flora/Cora. I have also seen the spelling Kora.
CORE-AH Same as an apple core Rhymes with Flora

But do not, in the name of all that is holy, spell it Kora

We have Coras in our family. We prounce it Core-a.

Core, for and drawer all rhyme in my South Eastern accent.
None of them rhyme with each other.

Core rhymes with Dora, Flora, core , door and four.

For rhymes with nor

Drawer - draw part rhymes with raw.

Well it is probably sensible to state one's accent when claiming Flora = floe-ra.

I know a Cora who pronounces it coh-ra (so a bit like coral without the L). I find I'm constantly having to correct myself because my head wants it it to rhyme with Flora or Dora. Much prefer the regular pronunciation (rhyming with Flora).

coe-ra and floe-ra make no phonetic sense
They make perfect sense in my accent.

There are many accents in the United Kingdom that sound very different.

@mistermagpie Oh that's good to know!!! I love Cora pronounced that way (like Flora, Dora).... just wasn't sure if it was an ambiguous pronunciation or if people would assume Caw-ra, which would be annoying!
