Nickname for Audrey

I love this classical name and it is now on our short list, but nicknames are important to my husband and we struggle to find any that come naturally.

Aud sounds a bit like odd Grin. Any suggestions?

Auds

IVflytrap · 08/02/2022 23:02

Addie?

I love Audrey, it's a great name. I also get where you DH is coming from, as my extended family is a big one for nicknames/diminutives as a way of showing affection, and if I didn't come up with one first, I know they'd beat me to it.

GoldenGorilla · 08/02/2022 20:12

The only Audrey I know is called BeanieBobs by her family.

Maybe just reassure your husband that nicknames evolve even if names aren’t easily shortened? We also have a “nicknamey” family and my sister Ann has at least 15 nicknames, despite having the shortest possible name.

PamelaDoov · 08/02/2022 19:56

I think Audrey would naturally become Auds, which is very cute

LondonReturner · 08/02/2022 19:40

Aude is French for "dawn" and is a name in its own right. (I have a friend with that name.) It could be cute and cool as a nickname for Audrey.

Though I generally agree that you can't predetermine nicknames. They just happen!

Not Oddy Shock

2reefsin30knots · 08/02/2022 17:32

Oddi?

NNs tend to just happen IME

RestingStitchFace · 08/02/2022 17:28

Why does it need a nickname at all? It's a great name

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/02/2022 21:23

That's was our aunts name and we called her Aunty,
Does that help?
Hmm

SwedishEdith · 07/02/2022 21:03

One I know is Drey pronounced Dray. She's a mature woman though, not a baby.

Kanaloa · 07/02/2022 21:00

But - Lili and Vivi aren’t any shorter to say than Audrey. They have less letters but they’re just as short and easy to say.

Maybe you could name her middle name so she can have initials? So if she was Audrey Jane you could call her A.J.

Other than that any shortening of Audrey that sounds like an everyday name is going to be a huge reach and a bit pointless if the name you like is the lovey Audrey!

Dee Dee

I have an almost 9 yr old Audrey and it’s never been shortened by us or any of her friends or family. It might in future but so far it hasn’t happened naturally. Of course we have silly nicknames for her, they just aren’t shortened versions of her name.

Notonthestairs · 05/02/2022 11:52

My Aunt Audrey is DeeDee.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2022 11:51

I really don’t think it needs one -

Audie? Deedee? Ree?

Scarby9 · 05/02/2022 11:49

Dree

GameofPhones · 05/02/2022 11:45

It seems to be a diminutive that the OP wants, rather than a nickname as such. Diminutives are affectionate (literally meaning 'making small').
They can be longer than the original name, often using repetition I guess to linger affectionately on calling the person. Audrey itself is fine, but if you want a more affectionate name based on it I would go with Didi or Deedee.

newbiename · 05/02/2022 11:32

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I find forced nicknames really quite odd, a nickname evolves naturally in time. Audrey is lovely why is it important to your husband?Confused
Yes. Nicknames evolve with the person. Shortening of names is a diminutive. eg Aud.
positivevibesonly22 · 05/02/2022 11:22

Aud or Auds but like pp said it would evolve naturally. Both my DS have short names as we didn't want them getting shortened so we picked accordingly.

TrashyPanda · 05/02/2022 11:05

There are diminutives, like Aud, and then there are nicknames, like Toffee. Nicknames tend to come about spontaneously and don’t have anything to do with the actual name.

So there are no limits to giving your child a nickname.

Blubells · 05/02/2022 11:04

Some of the suggestions are not only ugly imo but are just as long (2 syllables) as Audrey.

I mean Riri, Aura, Andy... Just stick to Audrey!

shreddednips · 05/02/2022 11:00

I come from a very nicknamey family but don't have a name that shortens easily. I'm sure she'll still acquire a nickname, it just might not be related to her actual name. Audrey is lovely and if you both love it, I wouldn't choose a name you love less just so it can be shortened.
