Any thoughts on this name for a boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
silentpool · 05/02/2022 03:28

Poor child will continually be telling people how to spell and pronounce his name.

lilPeeky · 05/02/2022 03:38

As it’s the name of a lawyer who took a leading side in the brexit campaign I think it might saddle a child with a world of unintentional issues. Like calling a child after any other diversive political figure

Flutterflybutterby · 05/02/2022 03:43

I can't even say the name Jolyon without imagining a skinny, nasal voiced, unpleasant, know-it-all little boy wearing, for some reason, green velvet knickerbockers.

RedRobin100 · 05/02/2022 03:49

Mega pass

Whataplonkerheis · 05/02/2022 04:06

My DC (15) has one in their class.

As someone upthread suggested, he is theatrically posh.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 05/02/2022 07:56

It isn’t a made up name or non name! I can’t believe these posters saying that. Just because you’ve never heard of a name…. There are plenty of people on this thread who’ve met more than one, with different pronunciations.

SuperbOwls · 05/02/2022 08:06

I've known two in my time. One pronounced joe-lion who was a Cornish surfer dude, and one teen pronounced jolly-on who has very trendy, but quite normal parents. Neither were theatrically posh! Both went by Joe as a nickname. Use it if you love it!

lollipopsandrainbows · 05/02/2022 08:29

We have a Jolyon in my family but it's pronounced Jo-Leon.

WhoppingBigBackside · 06/02/2022 17:54

It's pronounced Joll-yun

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/02/2022 23:45

No it isn’t.
It’s Jol-ee-yon.

fablett · 06/02/2022 23:53

Please don't because of the horrible QC

TottersBlankly · 07/02/2022 06:57

Googling ‘How to pronounce Jolyon’ brings up a whole world of fun. Grin

I say ‘ Joll yn ‘ - always with a sort of upward lilt, which is what makes it such a cheerful name.

SallyWD · 07/02/2022 07:23

I know one little Jolyon. The family are quite wealthy and posh. I like the name.

NativityDreaming · 07/02/2022 07:30

It is a horrible name.

Anotherhill · 07/02/2022 07:30

I’ve known a few. All very normal people, all state school educated. One was in my primary school, and so it’s always just been another name. Nicknamed Joly.

Firebird83 · 08/02/2022 23:12

I always thought it was pronounced JOE-lee-un.

Redsquirrel5 · 08/02/2022 23:27

My friend’s brother has this name different spelling. We live in the north. Don’t think he ever had any problem being called it. I like it but then he was a pleasant lad and my older boys thought he was great. You don’t hear it very often.

Teenylittlefella · 08/02/2022 23:35

I used to know a Jolyon in our East Anglian village back in the 70s. He was JOLL-eean.
Apparently he was pronouncing his own name wrong. We all called him Jolly.

babyjellyfish · 09/02/2022 11:14

It's pronounced Joe-lee-on, not Jolly-on.

It's a little out there but I've met a couple.

Makes me think of the Forsyte Saga (good) and Jolyon Maugham (knob).

One of the Jolyons in the Forsyte Saga went by "Jon".

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 23/02/2022 23:08

@tillytoodles1

Its ok if you're terribly posh and he'll go to Eton or Harrow.
GrinHysterical!! My sons at Harrow and had a friend called Jolyon!!
DogsAndGin · 02/03/2022 19:31

Nope

LittleGwyneth · 02/03/2022 21:47

I quite like it, I think perfectly useable if you're living in naice London / a comparable town.

BlueFlavour · 02/03/2022 22:31

But he gets the nickname Jolly Smile
Worth it I think

schoolsoutforever · 02/03/2022 23:03

I like unusual names but I’m not massively keen on this one. I think it’s because, as other have said, it only seems to have a place in the upper echelons and seems to be (perhaps unfairly) a marker for poshness. Sorry!

Giggorata · 03/03/2022 04:34

I knew a female Jolyon, pronounced JO-lee-on. She was vair posh.
