As it’s the name of a lawyer who took a leading side in the brexit campaign I think it might saddle a child with a world of unintentional issues. Like calling a child after any other diversive political figure

I can't even say the name Jolyon without imagining a skinny, nasal voiced, unpleasant, know-it-all little boy wearing, for some reason, green velvet knickerbockers.

It isn’t a made up name or non name! I can’t believe these posters saying that. Just because you’ve never heard of a name…. There are plenty of people on this thread who’ve met more than one, with different pronunciations.

I've known two in my time. One pronounced joe-lion who was a Cornish surfer dude, and one teen pronounced jolly-on who has very trendy, but quite normal parents. Neither were theatrically posh! Both went by Joe as a nickname. Use it if you love it!

We have a Jolyon in my family but it's pronounced Jo-Leon.

Googling ‘How to pronounce Jolyon’ brings up a whole world of fun. Grin

I say ‘ Joll yn ‘ - always with a sort of upward lilt, which is what makes it such a cheerful name.

I know one little Jolyon. The family are quite wealthy and posh. I like the name.

I’ve known a few. All very normal people, all state school educated. One was in my primary school, and so it’s always just been another name. Nicknamed Joly.

My friend’s brother has this name different spelling. We live in the north. Don’t think he ever had any problem being called it. I like it but then he was a pleasant lad and my older boys thought he was great. You don’t hear it very often.

I used to know a Jolyon in our East Anglian village back in the 70s. He was JOLL-eean.
Apparently he was pronouncing his own name wrong. We all called him Jolly.

It's pronounced Joe-lee-on, not Jolly-on.

It's a little out there but I've met a couple.

Makes me think of the Forsyte Saga (good) and Jolyon Maugham (knob).

One of the Jolyons in the Forsyte Saga went by "Jon".

I like unusual names but I’m not massively keen on this one. I think it’s because, as other have said, it only seems to have a place in the upper echelons and seems to be (perhaps unfairly) a marker for poshness. Sorry!

I knew a female Jolyon, pronounced JO-lee-on. She was vair posh.
