Artemis, Penelope or Dorothy

These are my top three names for dd no2. Her sister is called Primrose (nn Posy). Our surname begins with P and is 2 syllables.

  1. Artemis (nn Artie)
  2. Penelope (nn Penny)
  3. Dorothy (nn Dottie/Dotty)

What do prefer?

Isn't Artemis a boy's name?

19lottie82 · 05/02/2022 00:04

I’m obviously in the minority but I think Artemis is horrendous……. Sorry!

Kite22 · 05/02/2022 00:01

From your title, I'd have said Penelope, but with the added info in the opening post apart from it making me think 'Penelope Pitstop' I've changed to Dorothy.

Friend has just called her baby Dorothy, and is referring to her as Dottie.

To my (old age) ears, it it very much an old lady name, but to the younger ears of people who are having children, I guess it is very much of the fashion of the moment.

Marimaur · 04/02/2022 23:58

Penelope works across ages. I knew a Penny growing up that was very cool. I think it’s a great name, kinda 60s.

I really want to like Artemis, but it’s so pretentious.

Dorothy is cute for a child, but just a bit twee after that.

kitcat15 · 04/02/2022 23:45

No no and no...sorry don't like any

Chichimcgee · 04/02/2022 23:44

I like Primrose and Juniper for what it’s worth lol

I think names should go together somewhat as they’ll always be times when you say ‘oh yes I have two kids name1 name2’ or they’ll say they have a sister called whatever. It’s not hugely important but I know 3 sisters called similar to aquariella, esmerelda and Jane. Rhyming names as well or very similar names can sound odd together

LaurensILikeYouALot · 04/02/2022 23:41

I love Dorothy.

I know a little Artemis and it's such a distinct name that I find it jarring on a shy, blonde child. Maybe she'll grow into it.

Chichimcgee · 04/02/2022 23:40

I love Artemis but I know a lot of pets with that name and I don’t know whether it’s just the people I know but it’s seen as a male name (probably due to Artemis fowl)

I like Penelope and Dorothy, they’re a bit less out there as well

Notajogger · 04/02/2022 23:37

@rachelrainbow

And what names do would you say are in the ‘style’ of Primrose?
Ivy, Ruby, Iris? If you want to go vaguely nature themed...
Frazzled2207 · 04/02/2022 23:37

My pref girl name was Penelope nn Nel.
(Had boys)
Love that name but not keen on Penny & Posy

Seriouslymole · 04/02/2022 23:35

None of them - I was sure Artemis was a boy’s name. Surely Persephone nn Percy - to go with Posy.

Notajogger · 04/02/2022 23:35

Also Artemis is a lot of name to live up to!! If she's a wallflower it won't really work...

OlafLovesAnna · 04/02/2022 23:33

I love Artemis, my DD was very nearly an Artemis but I just didn't love Artie as a nickname.

I do like Penelope too though.

Notajogger · 04/02/2022 23:33

Artemis doesn't go with Primrose.
Not Penelope as it'd be a bit naff being too matchy with her sister and the P surname.
That leaves Dorothy - Dottie is cute.

rachelrainbow · 04/02/2022 23:32

And what names do would you say are in the ‘style’ of Primrose?

Really interesting to hear your feedback. Thanks so much!

I studied Classics at uni and Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the wilderness which I love.

How much do you think it matters about your children’s names sounding good together?? My husband is adamant it’s nonsense - once someone is an adult, sibling names mean nothing. I’m not sure I agree - Primrose and Artemis is an odd combo.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2022 23:28

Prefer Penelope.

Isaisa · 04/02/2022 23:27

Love them all! But Dorothy is my favourite and goes better with Primrose imo

MathsFiend · 04/02/2022 22:39

I would think Artemis is a boy’s name (think one of Alex James’ sons was called it?). I’d be wary kids would call her Fartemis, tbh

DramaAlpaca · 04/02/2022 22:33

Dorothy is my favourite of the three, but all are a completely different style to Primrose.

CharlieBoo · 04/02/2022 22:27

Oh Dorothy is just gorgeous! Especially with dotty as a nickname..

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 04/02/2022 21:55

the musketeer was Aramis

Aurorie11 · 04/02/2022 21:54

Artemis screams one of the 3 musketeers to me.
I assume your surname isn't Perkins, otherwise Dorothy is definitely out, but prefer this to the other names

MrsToadflax · 04/02/2022 21:49

Not keen on Artemis. Love Dorothy- Dorothy Parker, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Gale. Fab name.

DemBonesDemBones · 04/02/2022 20:50

Artemis or Penelope. Dorothy will always be a chain smoking old lady name to me!
