What's your verdict on this girl's name?
I really love it. It's used in my husband's country of origin, but is still quite unusual (although widely known) there. It means peace and glory, so it's kind of a double barrelled name... I thought it could be shortened to Mira if people struggle with it in the UK. I quite like strong names with lots of rich sounds like Ms and Rs... My husband, however, says in his country it sounds like the name of a villager Hmm that doesn't mean much to me haha but I think what he means is it sounds like a country bumpkin kind of name? Grin we only go to his home country for summer holidays and Christmas though, so it's more important how people will take it in the UK. I don't want to go with it if it sounds overly pretentious or not particularly pretty to English ears... What's your opinion on it?

Think it sounds like a country to be honest. But it's almost there, I can see how something similar would be nice!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/02/2022 15:14

There are bound to be a ton of 'Mira' s being named shortly after Mirabel in Encanto so I would keep that in mind.

It's nice to give a nod to your DHs culture but not if he doesn't like the name too. You need to find one you both like.

HangoverSquare · 01/02/2022 15:10

I don't know of any countries that end in slav/slava... unless people are thinking of the stans (Kazakhstan etc)?

Not a country but maybe they're reminded of Bratislava. And former Yugoslavia.

Mama1980 · 01/02/2022 15:04

I really like it but agree it is likely to be shortened/become Mirka or another variation.

GlumyGloomer · 01/02/2022 14:28

I recognise the name as the heroine from the movie 'I am Dragon'. Based on that I think its quite cool.

Hbh17 · 01/02/2022 14:17

Mrs Miroslava Federer (yes, that one) is always known as Mirka.

@Allpenguinsarepingus

I like ´Mira’ which is liked to the word ´peace’ but also ´world’ right? And your little girl will be your world :)
That is so cute

@Flutterflybutterby

It sounds more like a place name than a person's name to me
Strange, so many people have said that. To me it definitely sounds like a person's name, as there are so many eastern European names that end in slav/slava: Stanislav, Yaroslav, Sviatoslav, Rostislav, Mstislav... with female versions having the "a". I don't know of any countries that end in slav/slava... unless people are thinking of the stans (Kazakhstan etc)?

I love Marina. Not so keen on Miroslava but the nickname Mira is nice.

Miriam and Marina work well as international names in a number of languages. I've worked with Marinas from Spain, Bulgaria and Indonesia!

WindInTheWillows7 · 01/02/2022 13:29

@HacerSonarSusPasos

I love the sound of Mira, but Miroslava does sound a bit easter european peasant woman (and i am eastern european lol).

How about... Miruna? Milena? Vera? Romina? Magda?

Yes, I also like Marina and Miriam :)

@PattyPan

Slave comes from the word Slav, because Slavs were captured as slaves in medieval times.
Interesting! Didn't know that

@EchoChamber7

Be sure to ask all the diminutives of the name in the native language - some of the Slavic names can have quite a few so she might be called names that are very different- Alexander = Sasha, etc.

Just a thought.

Yes you're right!

I know a woman with this name (she's Slovakian) and I think it's really nice. She gets Miro (Meero) for short.

steppemum · 01/02/2022 12:59

although, having said that about Miroslava, I didn't think that about Yaraslava, who is a friend of mine. Maybe because the Yara sound is so soft.

HangoverSquare · 01/02/2022 12:51

@KedgeIsland

Unfortunately, my associations with the male version of the name are with Miroslav Radic -- I know he was acquitted for lack of evidence, but he's a pretty murky character.

Mira is nice.

Miroslav Radic was my first thought too. Not the kind of person I'd want people to think of when they met my baby...

WindInTheWillows7 · 01/02/2022 12:06

@steppemum

I speak Russian, so the name and meaning is familiar to me.

But the slava part, even though I know the meaning, feels like the word slave in English.

For this reason I wouldn't use it.

Mira is really pretty

Interesting. To me, "Slava" makes me think of "Slav"/"Slavic", which I quite like Grin

@irishfarmer

The Miro bit is nice, the slava bit really puts me off. It just doesn't feel nice in my mouth (I know that sounds strange!), also I think of slave, or possibly something to do with saliva. I tired to look up the meaning to hopefully help with an alternative, it is a town in Romania.
Not even a town, just some obscure commune. No one would make that association.

@emmathedilemma

Sounds like an eastern european country!
It is. It's Czech and Slovakian name. However quite dated in these times.
