Miroslava

What's your verdict on this girl's name?
I really love it. It's used in my husband's country of origin, but is still quite unusual (although widely known) there. It means peace and glory, so it's kind of a double barrelled name... I thought it could be shortened to Mira if people struggle with it in the UK. I quite like strong names with lots of rich sounds like Ms and Rs... My husband, however, says in his country it sounds like the name of a villager Hmm that doesn't mean much to me haha but I think what he means is it sounds like a country bumpkin kind of name? Grin we only go to his home country for summer holidays and Christmas though, so it's more important how people will take it in the UK. I don't want to go with it if it sounds overly pretentious or not particularly pretty to English ears... What's your opinion on it?

It’s a beautiful name with a beautiful meaning but the way it sounds is not understood well in the UK, although Mira is a good alternative.

lljkk · 09/03/2022 15:57

if it's a combined name, like Rosemary or AnnaBel, can't it be Mira-something else nice?

Mira-freedom, Mira-Love, Mira-Strength etc.

Slava just doesn't work well in English. I think of Slobber & Salivate (sorry).

Lambkin689 · 09/03/2022 13:30

For more context, my husband is Ukrainian. I'm thinking the meaning of the name (peace and glory) is very fitting given the tragic situation the country is facing right now. Haven't completely decided yet though. It would be nice for them to have a Ukrainian name nontheless.

Sounds like a contraceptive op sorry.

I am Serbian and we have a Miroslava in the family- she Mira and is an older relative- we also have Mirianna (who is an younger cousin and goes by Mimi)

FridaRose · 09/03/2022 13:17

@WindInTheWillows7 you said you like Marina. Would also suggest Milena - v popular in Russia now. Can shorten to Millie

FridaRose · 09/03/2022 13:14

I know a miroslava
She's called Slava for short.

Not for me. Way too edgy for England.

Comes from Mir - world/peace, and slava - being well-known.

Leeloo1233 · 07/03/2022 16:17

Makes me think of Bratislava or Yugoslava, and now Slava Ukraine!

Elysant · 24/02/2022 12:51

It's mostly dated and rustic name in former Yugoslavia, modern South Slavic prefer Mirna or Mila or other sweet short name. It's name most Slavic Yugoslavians associate with someone's grandmother. It even became dated among generation of today middle aged woman.

I can't speak for other Slavic countries.

Enko · 23/02/2022 20:52

I really like it. I knew one years ago and she was the loveliest lady too

Leeloo1233 · 23/02/2022 14:59

Really beautiful! Go for it and don't let other people's opinions to affect you. Once that's her name she will make it her own and it will be gorgeous, just like her. It does sound very eastern european (a bit like Emily and Karen are "white girl" names) but thats not a bad thing obviously

DogsAndGin · 23/02/2022 14:35

I’m sorry OP, but I don’t like it at all

demoness · 23/02/2022 14:33

I think Miroslava "Mira" is beautiful. I know a Miroslava who is known as Mirka.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 02/02/2022 08:53

If you like strong sounding names with Ms and Rs, how about:

Ramona?
Ruxandra?
Martha

busyeatingbiscuits · 02/02/2022 08:47

The Slava part doesn't sound particularly elegant to British ears, and the whole name is maybe a bit midde aged? Reminds me of an Eastern European Dolores or Pauline.

Mira, Mila, Marina, Mariana are all lovely though.

Ceramide · 02/02/2022 08:35

I like the alternatives of Miriam and Marina.

I don't like the ending of Miraslava as it reminds me of the word slaver (meaning to drool or slobber).

LethargicActress · 02/02/2022 08:09

My first thought was that it sounds like the name of a country too.

Naomi is lovely though.

meditrina · 02/02/2022 08:05

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

There are bound to be a ton of 'Mira' s being named shortly after Mirabel in Encanto so I would keep that in mind.

It's nice to give a nod to your DHs culture but not if he doesn't like the name too. You need to find one you both like.

That would be Mirr-a, though

The Slavic prounciation is Meer-a

But it might get confusable, and that might be a pita

Thirtytimesround · 01/02/2022 23:01

Makes me think of Miroslav Radic and the wars, also slave. I’d go for Mira but lose the slava personally.

GlamGiraffe · 01/02/2022 22:36

Mira on its own is nice. Even in London i can still see what your husband means about Miraslava sounding like a country name though. It will make a difference to him because of how he feels his relatives etc will view it too i would imagine.

CatsArePeople · 01/02/2022 22:13

it's ok, but clunky. she will be Mira or Slava or whatever else.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/02/2022 19:12

@Iamanicepersonreally

It's OK. It sounds like the name of a country to me.
Yes me too.

Maybe something like Mariana instead?

Yes, he said it might grow on him but there are other names we both really like (Naomi, Miriam and Marina) so we'll probably go with one of those. I was thinking about it from his perspective, and I would hate to feel compelled to call my child "Trevor" or "Jordyn" just because my partner loved it Grin

Mira is nicer

TheBeesKnee · 01/02/2022 15:15

No one in England will be able to pronounce it. Don't set your kid up for a struggle from day one.

It does sound like a narod name but that's the least of your worries.

Sincerely, someone with an Eastern European name which has been butchered all my life to the point that I just use a western sounding short version.
