Would your own name work as a baby name now?

Mine wouldn't, I don't think.

It's Belinda, but I go by variations of it. Was very popular in Australia in the 70's. But I can't remember the last time I heard of a baby named Belinda.

Do you have a nice timeless name or a dated one like mine?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Planetzero · 31/01/2022 09:56

No, I have a very 1960s name. There was a song in the charts with my name in the year I was born.

ColdNovemberRain · 31/01/2022 09:55

Definitely. It is a classic name but massively uncommon when I was growing up so I stuck out like a sore thumb. It's now one of the most common names in use at the moment and I still can't get used to hearing it yelled across public places without thinking someone is talking to me.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 31/01/2022 09:52

Yes, it’s been popular for about 600 years. I know women and girls with my name from aged 3–93.

Lemonweightloss · 31/01/2022 09:49

@tomyeggs, couldn't agree more.
My ds has a classic, timeless name, too.

KurtWilde · 31/01/2022 09:48

Only 85 people in the world have my name 😱

And more men than women. Interesting.

I like it though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jojobees · 31/01/2022 09:46

Yes. I was born in 1980 and was the only one I knew of for a very very long time. I see it becoming very popular now.

KurtWilde · 31/01/2022 09:45

@newtb I've never thought to look how many of my name there are.

Off to Google..

leavingthispoohole · 31/01/2022 09:44

Never thought of it before but absolutely love the name Gemma!

newtb · 31/01/2022 09:37

No Idea, there's less than 400 of me on the planet.

Don't think my middle name would, it's Lenore.

Bagadverts · 31/01/2022 09:37

Mine would depend where you are in the country. Area with Indian population probably fine, otherwise a bit of a pain.

tomyeggs · 31/01/2022 09:34

Yes my name is one of the classic/royal type names that just never goes out of style. I'm very lucky. This is why I've been careful to name my own children classic names (even if some people might think they're boring choices)- far better to have a beautiful, classic name that stands the test of time than a faddy trend- based one (like the trend for old lady names at the moment like Ivy/Edith etc) where there will be several in a year group at school and the child runs the risk of disliking it when older and it has inevitably fallen out of fashion again.

FairyLightQueen · 31/01/2022 09:32

No, despite being born in the 90s my name was dated then - it's Gemma. Lovely but very much of its time!

PattyPan · 31/01/2022 09:31

No. It didn’t even work then!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 31/01/2022 09:30

No. Nobody can spell it or pronounce it now apparently
Danielle

nansbigpants · 31/01/2022 09:29

5 years ago I would have said no, but I've seen mine mentioned quite a few times on the baby name board recently with very favourable responses so I think it may have a minor come-back.

Unfortunately it was very dated when I was given it. I have only ever met one other person with this name that is not at least 35 years older than me.

tomyeggs · 31/01/2022 09:28

@Flutterflybutterby

(It's a Lucy/Emily/Amy/Katie/ type name)
You're called Alice, aren't you. If so- it's a stunning name.
Finallygotme · 31/01/2022 09:26
@CraftMaker is it Eevee? Jynx? Togepi? Raichu?

My cousin named her DD after a Teletubby.
You can't just leave that there! Which one?

I love Catherine and Katie, would be on my list if I had another.

ladygindiva · 31/01/2022 09:25

Elizabeth. Its a constant classic, so yes. I like it, always have.

Lemonweightloss · 31/01/2022 09:23

I was born late 60s. There were always 3 or 4 in the same class and more throughout the school. It's a typical middle name. My dgd has it as hers. Think Jane, Claire, Laura.
I like it. My friend's dd used it a few years ago. It was strange because she'd named her first dad Coco then for second dd this not out there name at all.
My dm chose lovely names for all 4 of us imo.

ZealAndArdour · 31/01/2022 09:21

Mines one of the female “Z” names, so I think yes, it would work for a baby.

Think Zoe, Zena, Zara, Zelda, Zena sort of thing.

Twizbe · 31/01/2022 09:17

Mine is a timeless classic. Always a few around.

sadmad · 31/01/2022 09:15

Mine is top 10 now. Was almost unheard of 30 years ago! Mum was ahead of her time Grin

KurtWilde · 31/01/2022 09:15

@CraftMaker is it Eevee? Jynx? Togepi? Raichu?

My cousin named her DD after a Teletubby.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 31/01/2022 09:14

My name is mentioned a couple of times upthread. I don’t absolutely HATE it…in fact I quite like the long version but I really dislike the shortened version, which unfortunately is what I’m always known by. My mum decided to use the less common spelling, but to me it’s a name that sounds harsh and in my head it doesn’t suit me at all (obviously I should really be called something much more glamorous 😉). It’s of its time, but that’s usually for women at least 10-20-30 years older than me. I can’t see it having a surge in popularity, mainly because of the shortened version sounding so, well, unattractive in my opinion! However someone upthread called it beautiful, so I’ll take the compliment and thank you ☺️

BadPlaceJanet · 31/01/2022 09:09

Interesting to see Catherine and Katie mentioned as dated. Mine is a variant of those and I think it falls solidly into the "timeless" bucket. I don't think it's dated at all and wouldn't bat an eyelid at a baby with our name now.

I've never been particularly fond of it, but it's OK.
