Juliet, Charlotte, Scarlett, or Violet?

Which is your favorite? And which seems like it would best fit someone fabulously romantic and witty? Someone who loves to read in a heathery, wildflower field and could lead a Jane Austen novel? Thank you Star

Agree with others that Juliet is both the nicest name on the list and fits the ‘romantic heroine’ profile best. We considered it for DD but actually rejected it on the basis that it was too romantic - we went for something slightly stronger and edgier in the end.

Violet is quite nice but I picture either a terribly proper Edwardian lady who takes tea in the drawing room or a cheerful dimple-faced schoolgirl - so not the image you describe!

Agree that Scarlett is brasher and more modern, and I find Charlotte just too bland and overdone now to conjure anything in particular. If anything, I think it’s a bit stolid and sensible sounding to be romantic.

Juliet, although I might be slightly biased as I have a DD with this name. Violet and Charlotte are lovely too, not too keen on Scarlett.

Didn’t mean to be so specific with the Austen ask, I just meant someone who has similar characteristics as an Austen protagonist, not necessarily the same naming style as she is known to choose very classic, plain names for her characters. That’s on me, I should’ve been more precise.

As for someone not wanting me to foist a romantic personality onto a child who may wish to define themselves of their own accord — unless we stick purely to the classics, most names have a personality and thankfully, all these names have a few nicknames for a child in search of a different identity. Thank you to everyone so far for your feedback xx

Charlotte.
Scarlett is either o'Hara and so iconic (for lots of very positive reasons). Or a hooker.
Violet is too close to violent.
Juliet is twee.

I like Charlotte best out of the four, but I think Violet might fit the description best.

As long as you’re not expecting your daughter to be walking around a flower garden arm in arm with a similarly named friend under a dainty umbrella, it’s probably fine.

Given the Georgian period ended some 180 years ago, I don’t think this is a huge issue.

Charlotte, as it's a contemporary name for Jane Austen. It has a beautiful quality of being both soft and strong.

Not Scarlett, someone upthread called it 'brash' and I'd agree with that.

Juliet out of those, though technically /date-wise Charlotte is a better fit - there’s one in Pride and Prejudice. Julia is a stronger name than Juliet and also fits the timeline better. Violet and Scarlett are both wrong. Violet is mousy and weedy to me, and Edwardian, as pp said. Scarlett is too modern/American.

I like Juliet or Charlotte, but Charlotte (cf Bronte) is more nineteenth century (Juliet is not very nineteenth century). Scarlett is also pretty, but more modern - and I’m not fond of Violet, which says Edwardian to 1920s for me.

If you want Romantic and 19thc novel style, why not Clarissa/Emily/Lydia/Catherine/Marianne/
Christabel/Mariana/Dorothea/Rosamond etc.?

In fact, Marianne and Rosamond are very much the feel you want and a bit more unusual! Christabel too!

And if she was the lead in a Jane Austen I imagine she’d probably be called something plain and fitting to the time (Lizzy, Emma, Jane, Catherine, Lydia etc).

I would choose Juliet because I think it’s just the nicest name from the list. I dislike Violet and Scarlett and think Charlotte is nice but very popular.

I wouldn’t worry too much about fitting your aesthetic or sounding like someone who reads in a heathery wildflower field if this is a name for your child. They’ll be whoever they are so I think it’s more important to pick the name you love the most.

@Luredbyapomegranate I adore Louisa, Caroline, Susannah, Felicity, Serena, and Julia!! Honor is impossibly cool and Bond-esque. It should definitely be used more! So many of the names you suggested fit my aesthetic perfectly, thank you 💕
