Middle name for Eileen?

We've definitely decided on Eileen, but are stuck for a middle name that sounds nice with it. Any ideas, please?

Michelle (my first name is Eileen 😀)

LavenderHills · 31/01/2022 10:51

Update: Eileen Joy is still the leading contender, with consideration also being given to Freya and Miranda.

Also, thanks to @JessicaJacket and @ThePennyJustDropped the bump is now being referred to as Talulah and I won't be at all surprised if the nickname sticks around post birth!

@Finallygotme

Eileen is not a pretty sounding name, so I'd suggest something prettier as a middle name so she could use that instead if she wishes

Because the sum purpose of a Girls name is to be pretty Hmm

It's actually grown on me as I've read this. Anyway there are so many different names around now and at least Eileen is an actual name.

That's 100% not what I meant - if the OP had said they were picking something really frilly and 'pretty' as a first name then I would have suggested something more sensible and plain (probably not Eileen though) as a middle name.

I think the single syllable ones all sound lovely. Especially with a longer surname like yours.

Eileen Rose
Eileen Joy
Eileen May/Mae
Eileen Maud
Eileen Kate
Eileen Grace
Eileen Bea

My eldest has a name similar that I'm sure plenty of MNers would have told me she'd hate and change as soon as she could and be picked on.

She's in upper primary school and loves her name so far.

So ignore all the comments. Of which some are truly ludicrous.

I'm sure those commenting have children with very safe "top 3" names. We wanted ours to not be the third Olivia/Lily/Charlie/Harry in their class. I had 4 friends with the same name as me and hated it.

Eileen Roíse*

JessicaJacket · 31/01/2022 07:51

You could even do Eileen Talullah Rae!

Otherwise Eileen Freya is nice too. Nordic sounding.

I also love Ingrid, but it's a strong sort of name like Eileen, so maybe a bit much to have Eileen Ingrid? I like it though.

More Irish names:

Eileen Aoife
Eileen Rose
Eileen Maeve?

Shadappayourface · 31/01/2022 07:18

I like the suggestions of Tallulah and Freya!

Please don't go with the Aurelia/Sophia/Isla suggestions, they are recommended on EVERY poxy name thread.

I quite like Emerson but maybe thats's too many E's and if your surname ends in a "-on" too then it's probably too much?

Make sure you consider what the initials will be when you decide on a middle name!

greenteafiend · 31/01/2022 06:33

"I have seen what kids can do to each other's names, and what they do in the reports etc they have. A name like that is going to be hard to carry and easy for fellow students to adapt and use to tease if they choose."

Why? A 40 something like me might thinks it's a bit "daringly retro" as I'm old enough to remember some grandmas with that name.

But a primary school aged child will just think it's a name that sounds a bit like Ellie and a bit like Isla.

I know a couple of little Eileens (it's one of those names that "works" both in English and in Chinese/Japanese--Airin, Ai Lin etc.) and I've never known another child think it's remotely odd sounding.

Eileen is a lovely name. Helen is the same name though so don’t use that combo.
I am a fan of no middle name but do like Joy

Lalliella · 31/01/2022 00:40

Grimshaw.

Please don’t. You may like the name, but will your daughter? I wouldn’t.

LavenderHills · 31/01/2022 00:39

@ThePennyJustDropped

Another vote for Eileen Joy. Lovely.

Also the more times I've read Eileen on this thread the more I'm liking it. Plus the song is brilliant, so even if (minuscule possibility) the kids at school in 2030 are familiar with it and tell her to come on, well it's not insulting at all is it!

In fact if I had an Eileen I'd probably call her Talulah as a pet name in homage.

I LOVE the Talulah nickname suggestion, thank you!!

@GrannytoaUnicorn

Please pleeeeease don't do this to your child. She'll hate it and will change it the very moment she becomes old enough to.

I know granny names are all the rage at the moment but please don't make her suffer for it

I've said my piece and will not be responding to any more pleas not to use the name Eileen.

We are using it. Toora loora toora loo rye ay to you all Smile

@JessicaJacket

For the record, I made a hilarious Dexy joke, while also engaging with your question and saying multiple times how much I like the name. I'm also Irish 🇮🇪. But it is a good tune and nothing to put you off using the name at all! My name is in songs and I love it
@JessicaJacket Yes, that's true. No objection to your Dexy's joke Smile
