We've definitely decided on Eileen, but are stuck for a middle name that sounds nice with it. Any ideas, please?

Eileen Joy is gorgeous.

So is Eileen Miranda.

Eileen on a young girl will seem fresh and unusual.
It's a name with a wonderful 'sound' to it, the 'I' and the 'ee' sounds make it lyrical.

It's similar to the hugely popular Isla in that way but much more unusual.

BeetyAxe · 08/02/2022 10:44

I love Eileen Elizabeth, with a surname like Hamilton I think that would be a very proper name to have. I think it either needs to have one sound like Joy, or more than two to balance it out.

ThePennyJustDropped · 08/02/2022 10:38

And if any further positives were needed for the name, Eileen Gu who just won an Olympic skiing gold is a pretty awesome namesake to have for any young girl.

SE13Mummy · 02/02/2022 15:32

Eileen Joy is lovely.

Other than that, those names with harder sounds in them seem to work well e.g. Miranda, Rose, Kate, Megan, Sadie, Charlotte, Scarlett...

organicoatmilk · 02/02/2022 15:11

I hope that didn't sound like an insult. Just that it balances it out a bit more IMO.

organicoatmilk · 02/02/2022 15:10

Personally, I'd pick something a bit more modern or that is popular at the moment as Eileen sounds like an older person.

Eileen Isabella
Eileen Summer
Eileen Harper
Eileen Ruby

I don't see why Eileen is getting so many negative responses!

Isla is so popular at the moment and sounds very similar, then there is Ellie, Ivy, Evie, etc etc...

The song association will probably go over the heads of her peers, and if they have heard of it - it's a great song! As for it being old-fashioned, why is it any different to Ivy, Olive, Margot, Edith etc that are coming back in fashion?

I think it's lovely!

TheGratefulBread · 01/02/2022 11:07

Another vote for Eileen Joy. Also love Eileen Frances.

We're actually using Eileen as a middle name, for our daughter due in April, after my husband's beloved great-aunt who died last year.

@DoNotIron

Thank you *@LavenderHills* as a result of this thread I have been sounding out my name to myself and suddenly I feel a little bit proud of it! My dad chose Eileen for me and I grew up thinking 'Why? Of all the names ...?' I'm from Belfast and loads of people pronounce it Eh-leen, which irritates the hell out of me. But it does have a pleasant sound when pronounced 'properly'. I have, however, been called Irene and Elaine A LOT! And people do spell it wrongly, although neither of these facts has caused me much stress. Our GP always used to say 'Ah, it's Eileen Og'.

Eileen Joy does work well. And Eileen Grace is lovely too.

@DoNotIron I am so delighted if this thread has helped rehabilitate your name for you!

For me it is a family name and suffused with love and history. Also, there are some excellent Eileens in Irish literature. Go and re-read Light A Penny Candle next time you feel bad about your name Smile

Eileen Freya or Eileen Miranda, at least she'll have a nice middle name.

@GrannytoaUnicorn

Please pleeeeease don't do this to your child. She'll hate it and will change it the very moment she becomes old enough to.

I know granny names are all the rage at the moment but please don't make her suffer for it

It's due a revival though. I love it!

No-one will associate it in any negative way. The kids at school won't have heard of a song from two generations ago.

I like Eileen Antonia

Anoooshka · 31/01/2022 16:12

Mae or Maeve.

TopsieGreenwood · 31/01/2022 15:55

@BigYellowHat

Are you giving birth to a 50 year old?
I only know one Eileen who is 50ish. It's a granny name but very pretty
Thedailyfailx · 31/01/2022 12:29

I really like it SmileI love seeing all these traditional names coming back I like

Eileen Faith
Eileen Bliss
Eileen Amy
Eileen Rose
Eileen May
Eileen Emma
Eileen Emily
Eileen Pearl
Eileen Anna
Eileen Ann

But think my fave is Eileen Talulah, apart from the song it sounds so pretty and rolls nicely

JessicaJacket · 31/01/2022 12:07

@LavenderHills

Update: Eileen Joy is still the leading contender, with consideration also being given to Freya and Miranda.

Also, thanks to @JessicaJacket and @ThePennyJustDropped the bump is now being referred to as Talulah and I won't be at all surprised if the nickname sticks around post birth!
