Any thoughts on Zerelda as a Babyname for a girl?

I think it'd be a really cool name for a grown woman, but a bit odd for a baby. Better that than the other way around, though! It is quirky and maybe sounds a touch pretentious, but recently I started thinking that doesn't matter much. People "become" their names and then no one thinks anything of it. Also, while it's unusual the spelling is very logical so she won't have to spell it out all the time.

The name Zerelda is great. I like many who have commented first came across it from Mallory Towers. Go for it.

newyear1 · 30/01/2022 08:53

It sounds like a Super Mario character. Or is that Zelda?

Bichette · 30/01/2022 08:33

I much prefer Zelda.

@mathanxiety

Characteristics of victims of bullying are not invitations to bully.

Bullies bully because there is something wrong with them, not their victims.

You can't ensure your kid never runs into bullies. There's always going to be some around. But jesus, don't serve your kid up on a platter by giving them a stupid name!
YesPleaseMary · 30/01/2022 08:16

I also thought of Zerelda Brass! She was great!

AnnieAmelia · 30/01/2022 08:13

I thought Zerelda Brass, too. Wunnerful!

Vbree · 30/01/2022 04:57

I do think it's pretty though

Vbree · 30/01/2022 04:56

It's likely to invite bullying. My friend almost called her daughter Zelda. Someone asked if she was joking. Both names remind me of the Nintendo character.

mathanxiety · 30/01/2022 04:48

It doesn't sound like a film star unless you live in 1934.

Synchrony · 29/01/2022 21:01

@Kittymum7

Just no. Your kid will hate you for giving them a weird name.
Or they might love having a name that sounds like a film star, rather than being one of a million Ellies.

@WorstXmasEver

They'd just get called Zelda.

In my kids class there is a kid called "Gleb"...made up names are silly IMO

There's a Strictly dancer called Gleb. He's Russian

So, no, not silly. Just out of your frame of reference.

As are the other Zereldas that other people have mentioned!

Aquamarine1029 · 28/01/2022 21:03

Evil witch in the next Disney movie.

Pasdelacasa · 28/01/2022 21:01

It sounds like two names squished together.

‘My dad’s called Gerald and my Mum’s called Zelda, so they called me Zerelda’ sort of thing.

Not very nice.

Ellmau · 28/01/2022 20:57

Gleb isn't made up, it's a Russian name.

Pemba · 28/01/2022 13:28

It's a bit OTT.

Synchrony · 28/01/2022 12:26

I really like it! It did make me think of Malory Towers, but that character was generous and good natured for all her faults. I think it's beautiful sounding.

Stookeen · 28/01/2022 11:21

@Luredbyapomegranate

She sounds like a troublemaking bit part in The Gilded Age

It's OK as long as she has a big personality.

Is The Gilded Age any good?
NoraLuka · 28/01/2022 11:20

Touristy suburb of Algiers. It’s got a nice beach.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 28/01/2022 11:09

Nope.

It one of those pretentious made-up names. Plus it sounds like the name of a drug or pharmaceutical company.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/01/2022 10:52

I quite like it. I knew I'd encountered it before but had forgotten the Mallory Towers character!

It gives me a witchy vibe too, probably because of Aunt Zelda from Sabrina. I like names with a witchy vibe though like Sabrina, Morven, Morwenna and Morgana so a witchy vibe wouldn't put me off a name.

@IsadoraQuagmire

Everyone will immediately think of Zerelda Brass, I've always liked her though (and her favourite movie star Lossie Laxton)Grin
I was an eight year old Malory Towers reader unfamiliar with 1940s hairstyles, and wondering how on earth you did your hair with a big ‘roll’ on top. Grin

Other than Enid Blyton, my only other association with the name is that the outlaw Jesse James was married to a Zerelda Mimms.
