Hello 🙂
So ... I have found out I am having a baby boy. I am in love with the name Sonny. My hubby is going along with it but I'm not sure he is sold. I'm beginning to think it's not as nice as I thought and read lots of online things about how it's nice for a child or baby but not an adult 🙈
Please give me your thoughts and if anyone has any alternatives for a boys name ending in the "ee" sound.
Thank you!!

To be fair, at least you could shorten Solstice to Sol. I prefer Solstice to Sonny, if push comes to shove. Sonny is such a demeaning and insulting non-name. Fine if it grew out of another name or a family nickname but not as a given name that your child has no choice over. Would you call your daughter Daughtery or Girly? You can’t even shorten Sonny.

PattyPan · 26/01/2022 09:46

@ElephantOfRisk

I thought that it was used as a nickname when a boy had the same name as his dad? Same with Junior? Both now seem to be appearing as given names now but I'm not a fan.
There’s a Junior where I work, it’s a bit weird as he must be at least 40! So weird calling someone older and more senior than me, Junior.

I think I prefer Sunny to Sonny OP because it doesn’t have the youth/telling off associations but you do run the risk of producing a goth child…

Sunshine4you · 26/01/2022 09:39

I had a dog called sonny. Sorry.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 09:38

@Skeumorph

I absolutely love that everyone is shaking their heads sternly at Sonny but an alternative suggestion is SOLSTICE NICHOLAS

Grin

To be fair though, no one bar the person who suggested it thought it was a good idea - so, less positives than the number of people who like Sonny.

Absolutely love Sonny, it was top of my list until I asked about it here!!!!!!! Really can't understand all the hate for it. When DS was born I felt he just wasn't a Sonny but I'm not sure if it was all the hate from here that go in my head. Go for what you love. There are loads of "proper" names that I don't like but I wouldn't slate anyone for suggesting them.

UserBotAI999 · 26/01/2022 08:31

Apologies for suggesting the even worse Solstice 🤣

SoupDragon · 26/01/2022 08:29

It always makes me laugh when people say "oh, on MN it's this but in the real world it's different". No it isn't. MN is made up of real people (for the most part 🤣). The difference is you only see people posting who think strongly either way and not the whole host of people who think "meh" and can't be arsed. Exactly like real life.

Cigfree · 26/01/2022 00:39

If you like it, go for it. I think it’s a great name, for what it’s worth.

DillDanding · 26/01/2022 00:31

Sonny is a silly name and around these parts, it's er, a bit of a rough name. Sorry.

Hairyfriend · 26/01/2022 00:29

@Jinglebellsoncake

How is Sonny pronounced? S- on- ee Sunn-ee

Sorry if that's a silly question. I've only ever seen it written down

Phew, I thought I was the only one with no clue if its Sun-ee or Son-ee?

I did think it was a nn for Solomon, because the only time I saw it written was within a Jewish family.

What about Soren nico?
Or Solstice nicholas So+Ni
Make a nn that makes sense

OP, do not call your child Solstice Nicolas.

Oh, I don’t know.
Solstice Nicholas has a certain je ne sais quais! 🤣🤣🤣

MiddleClassProblem · 25/01/2022 23:46

@Babydust13 thank you for the backing. It’s been one of those days and I thought I would be finishing 6 hours of overtime with a MN backlash!

PeacheyPeach · 25/01/2022 22:55

I love this name xx
I know a couple of Sonny's, a mid teen and man in his 30s. Both pretty cool characters and they really suit their name
Not sure about all the hate!

TopCatsTopHat · 25/01/2022 22:55

Not a fan but I have negative associations as the mum of my ds classmate Sonny was batpoop crazy, allowed her son to be an utter horror so we were mightily relieved when we left the school and never saw him again. But if you are sane and intend to teach yours not be be an arse to his mates I think you could get away with it. Grin

ISeeTheLight · 25/01/2022 22:52

I know a Sonny. I'm not a fan. I like names that you could imagine them as a plumber, a doctor, a high court judge etc. Can't imagine a high court judge named Sonny tbh.

Agree with PP to go with Sonny as a nickname if you love it that much, or with another ee name.

rooarsome · 25/01/2022 22:52

Makes me think of the character in the Godfather... not a nice chap

eattooomuch · 25/01/2022 22:51

I like it and I generally don't like eee sounding names.

Or what at about Donald, NN duck Donnie ?

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2022 22:50

I only know one, who is 2. I always call him Sonny Jim! I think it's ok for an adult. You can have Oliver/ Ollie too. Barney I love. Aubrey is a bit posh but it does have an 'ee' sound!

Kite22 · 25/01/2022 22:47

We know he's a son.
Give him a proper name.

This.

'Sonny' is what a stranger in the street calls a lad, when being friendly. It is like calling someone (an adult) 'Mate' or 'Pal'. It is to attract a young boy's attention when you don't know his name.

isitmean · 25/01/2022 22:45

I love it. Great name. A grew up with a boy named Sonny, now in his 30's abs very, very handsome.

Thehouseofmarvels · 25/01/2022 22:40

Nickname for solomon?
