Thought on Clemency?

I posted asking about Joy and Mercy and this was suggested. (I am making a new thread because usually when I decide to ask about a new name mid-thread my comment is missed and posters only comment on the name in the OP, and I'm suddenly obsessed with hearing people's opinions about Clemency, as I feel sure I either adore it or despise it but I can't work out which Grin).

Quite awful I'm afraid. Screams Amish or Mormon, neither of which is an association I would welcome.

I've met a few Clemmie and Clem's recently but they've all been Clementine properly.

I know, it's gorgeous isn't it! I'm just worried it's a bit popular, and she might be one of 5 "If-Christ-hadn't-died-for-thee-thou-would-be-damned"s in her class.

I love virtue names. I like Clemency a lot, mostly because I had a great aunt called Clem and she was lovely.

My sister in law is called Clemency. She's a fab woman so I love the name. She's known as Clem mostly.

The only thing that she doesn't like about it is that as a child she couldn't find anything with her name on in shops.

I've never thought about death row in relation to her name.

Would it be Clem for short? I do like Clem and Clemmie - not sure about Clemency particularly in terms of the meaning. If you pick a virtue name (and I personally love virtue names) I think the meaning should be upbeat. I’m therefore not mad keen on either Mercy or Clemency.

I liked Faith or Gloria when I was pregnant. Hope is also nice as is Joy.
Also Honor is lovely and I also like Amity which is a bit more unusual.

I adore Mercy, it's my number 1 at the moment, although Mumsnet is very split about it! I know what you mean about the meanings being nice. I like Mercy for religious reasons, so for me the association is nice, but to others it seems to have a more negative connotation.

Amity is cool but I never did get over the Amityville Horror, I don't think I could name my daughter something that would remind me of that horrible film 😂

Honor is gorgeous but sounds awful with my surbame. Joy is on my list too. I love Hope and Faith but worried they are becoming more common.

Clementine is okay though and you could use the same nickname.

I prefer Clemencia in full - I'm not keen on Clemency and have not heard orbited as a name which is a different meaning.

Clemency associates with the boys name Clement / Clem time so I rather like it.

Awful. I think all virtue names sound bad though. Puritanical and religious.

Clemency makes me instantly think of murderers on death row as well so all in all not a name I'd choose.

Actually you hit the nail on the head there... We are very religious and I love puritan names! (Well, the nice ones, not things like "Flee-Fornication" and "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-would-be-damned", which are both real Puritan names used in the 17th century, much to my delight!) Grin

I was the person on the other thread so you'll be unsurprised to hear I love it. Lovely meaning, lovely name, makes me think of Betjeman's Youth and Age on Beaulieu River and of clever people like Clemency Burton-Hill.

It's a lovely sounding name but it's also a the term used for when death row inmates are appealing to have their sentences reduced or pardoned... I think that would put me off.
