@MrsTerryPratchett

The problem for me is there is no choice. If you end up with a rugby playing, beer drinking, swearing teenager her choices are:

Primrose
Rosie
Prim
Posy

Seriously? She'll end up changing her name. It screams, 'I want a girly girl'. And that leaves whomever you end up getting as a child in a corner. Much better to choose a name which has diminutives and nicknames which are a wider choice.

She could always go by "Ro". There generally always a neutral nn to be found somewhere.

That said I'm not keen on Primrose but certainly don't think it's awful. It would grow on me if I knew one.

NotNowAlan · 21/01/2022 08:11

Why would you saddle a child with a name like Primrose? It's so cloyingly twee.

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 21/01/2022 08:01

@onedayoranother

I like it but... I fear it brings up an image of a quiet compliant child.
Not the one I know! I like the name op
RuthW · 20/01/2022 22:04

Love it

drpet49 · 20/01/2022 20:00

Boring, boring name

FreshHeaven · 20/01/2022 19:55

I don't like Prim.
Prefer Rosemary or Rosamund.

Enterthedragons · 20/01/2022 19:52

Sounds uptight

muddyford · 20/01/2022 19:50

It does sound like a cow's name, like Buttercup or Snowdrop.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 20/01/2022 19:03

It’s beautiful

WinterCarlisle · 20/01/2022 19:02

I used to work with a Primrose: she was very highly qualified and expert in her very niche and aspirational field. She was great! I really like the name. Not having any more DC but I’ve already chosen it for my next dog or cat Smile

TreasuredMim · 20/01/2022 18:59

It's a cow's name.

BooksAndHooks · 20/01/2022 18:57

I like it and posy as a short name. Not keen on Prim.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 20/01/2022 18:55

It’s beautiful.

optimistic40 · 20/01/2022 18:55

Not that keen, but it's ok.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2022 18:55

It seems silly to me to take all more girly names off the table just because the girl might not be girly.

It's not that. Take Alexis. If she likes a less cute name, she can be Alex, Al or keep the original. If she like sweeter names, she can be Lexi or Ally.

With Primrose they're all twee. And either flowery or Prim.

My theory is, can the person pick up rubbish for a living and/or run the hadron collider? With one of the name/nickname combos. Because your kid could be anyone.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/01/2022 18:44

@ConstantCougher

Absolutely love it! Prim for short.
Who the hell wants to be called Prim?!?!

It’s awful OP - it’s prissy and wet.

Rose is lovely. Or Jasmine, if you want something less popular.

APileofLogs · 20/01/2022 18:40

I really like it.

TTCfirstbabyx · 20/01/2022 18:34

It seems silly to me to take all more girly names off the table just because the girl might not be girly.
That's almost like saying we need to take all more gender neutral off the table as well just because they might not be tom boy enough (not that I'm saying gender neutral names are tom boyish).
Who's to say Primrose is 'twee' anyway. Some people may think it is others like myself don't.
Like any child who does not like their name for whatever reason (which I should add could happen with any name), they can always choose to use an alternative/ nickname/ choose to use a middle name etc... Equally there is nothing to say they won't love it.
P.s I am not arguing as you are more than entitled to your opinion I am just trying to support OP with a name she likes.
Best wishes to OP with their choice. :)

BasaltIsland · 20/01/2022 18:17

Really don’t like it. The full name. Prim. Posy. All bad. Rose is nice, but I’d rather another name incorporating Rose or simply Rose than Primrose. They’re names that could suit any girl, rather than ultra-feminine Primrose.

When I imagine a primrose, I imagine a pink-and-pearls-clad but overbearing busybody for some reason.

PlanetNormal · 20/01/2022 18:06

It’s quite twee. Fine for a girly girl, but not so good if she grew up to be a football-playing tomboy who wanted to be a copper or a vet.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2022 18:01

I personally think it is very pretty (which I don't know why some people see as a bad thing)

It's not. Deciding what your DD will be like and boxing her into only a twee, cute name is a bad thing. I chose a name with a pretty long version and a short, neutral version. DD HATES the long version, properly despises is. So she uses the short one happily.

Primrose only has saccharine sweet versions.

TTCfirstbabyx · 20/01/2022 17:07

I am too thinking of using this name for my baby girl.
I find lots of people are negative about the name on here!
I personally think it is very pretty (which I don't know why some people see as a bad thing) and reminds me of spring and summer which I love (they are lovely little flowers which sprout all over my garden).
I also think it is a little different to all the more popular names which is nice (although I do believe it's popularity is on the rise).
My heart is telling me to go with this lovely name and I won't be deterred by all the negative comments.
If you feel your baby is a Primrose, go for it.
Best wishes with your baby girl. :) xx

ArtfulScreamer · 20/01/2022 15:21

I like it, it was on my list for what is now DS but DH wasn't keen so we decided on Iris.

PeskyRooks · 20/01/2022 15:14

I love it but then my dc have all got names unpopular with mumsnet unless it's the 'what names did you like but not have the guts to use' threads!

DoodleBelle · 20/01/2022 15:09

We are using it as one of our middle names for our DD due in a couple of weeks. I love it!
