Husband's awful name suggestions!

annaj83 · 18/01/2022 13:50

My husband's absolutely set on several absolutely awful names! I'm trying to convince him otherwise, but MIL and even some of my family are on his side. Don't know gender.
Please tell me I'm not going crazy, these names are awful
Indy
Jolene
Cosmo
Estella
Trisha
Kiana
Aliesha
Chastity

I honestly fear a child named any of those would be absolutely bullied. Any advice?

Nell, Jane, May, Diana for a girl and Jack, Charlie, Will for a boy

These are nice names. May is really nice as a first name imo.

You could use Ellen, Eleanor or Penelope for Nell.

Would you consider Willow for a girl if you like Will?

You will need to put your foot down and tell them all you are choosing the name and it's not a committee vote. If the baby gets his surname you give the first name.

And MIL definitely doesn't get a say - you can tell DH that this is absolutely not going to happen.

My advice would be to stop discussing the name - tell them nothing from now on, and don't engage in any more conversations.

TulipsGarden · 18/01/2022 15:50

I prefer his names to yours, to be honest. Some are terrible but I like Cosmo, Estella and Indy. Of your list I only really like Jack.

BashStreetKid · 18/01/2022 15:49

Surely he's not serious about Chastity? If my DH put that one forward I'd be laughing in his face.

BethDutton · 18/01/2022 15:49

Another vote for Cosima here. The more family members you involve in choosing the name the more confusion there will be. Try to park it for now and quietly figure it out with your DH.

The way I did it, I gave DH a list my shortlist of about 8 boy names and 8 girl names, he had some hard no’s and some strong yes’s and it was literally one conversation (first born was a boy so his girl name had he been a girl just rolled onto baby no 2 who was a girl). Both children’s second name is from his family’s side (living relatives he is fond of). If I had asked my mother or MIL their opinion or input it would have dragged on and on.

BelleEnderman · 18/01/2022 15:49

The only one I would consider- and I do really like!- is Estelle. Not Estella!

The others are dreadful - is he joking with you?

mathanxiety · 18/01/2022 15:46

Cosmo is a boy's name.

piney07 · 18/01/2022 15:46

Lol lol yes. Estelle would be nice? Indy is also fine. I think Patricia is due a comeback soon though!

Scirocco · 18/01/2022 15:44

Chastity is an exotic dancer stage name. Definitely not an option.

The only names on his list which would be tolerable imo are Estella (Estelle is nicer though) and Alicia (assuming he's spelled it incorrectly).

I quite like some of the names on your list, especially Nell. They're simple to say and to write, go with lots of middle name options, and are quite classic.

Maybe you could suggest slight variations of your names to see how he reacts? Eg - Eleanor, nn Nell; Jayne (a less common spelling variant but still widely accepted).

blyn · 18/01/2022 15:41

Dreadful (though Cosmo was considered quite a classy name at one time).

You choose your baby's name.

mathanxiety · 18/01/2022 15:37

It is absolutely not 'a big name in the states'.

QOD · 18/01/2022 15:33

Chastity is a big name in the states, a Texan friend years ago was telling me about her pastors daughter Chastity who had fallen pregnant at 14 or 15
She didnt find the name remotely hilarious which obvs I did ...

irishfarmer · 18/01/2022 15:33

They're not great! Chastity is by far the worst.

Don't get the Trisha hate, I know a few Trisha's who would be Patricia's

DepletingDopamine · 18/01/2022 15:32

Have you agreed to your DH getting the final say on the child’s name? If so why? Regardless if you don’t like any of the names you have to tell him. I’m sure you’ll find something else that you both agree on.

Iamanicepersonreally · 18/01/2022 15:28

They’re so bad that I don’t actually know if you’re being serious.

TaraRhu · 18/01/2022 15:26

Lol jolene!

roarfeckingroarr · 18/01/2022 15:25

I like Indie and Cosmo

MarshmallowFondant · 18/01/2022 15:24

Is he taking the piss? Husband, a Liverpool fan, kept coming up with ridiculous ideas like Ann Field (Surname) or Kingkenny (Surname) or any combination of initials which spelled KOP or LFC.

He didn't really mean it though.

Zilla1 · 18/01/2022 15:21

Estella unless your surname is Haversham.

MadameFantabulosa · 18/01/2022 15:20

Estella is nice.

Toffeevodkaplease · 18/01/2022 15:20

Estella is beautiful! I don't like the others though

Dumblebum · 18/01/2022 15:20

I’m also not sure your girls names are much better to be honest op. Diana and nell?

Laila747 · 18/01/2022 15:13

I don’t mind Estella….

But I think that’s because it reminds me of ‘Estrella’ and I do like a cold pint on a warm summers day

LittleGwyneth · 18/01/2022 15:11

I love Estella and I don't mind Indy (Indie / India) but the rest aren't great.

GreyGoose1980 · 18/01/2022 15:07

Estella is the only one I like. Alicia (that spelling) is okay too.

APileofLogs · 18/01/2022 15:05

I love Cosmo for a boy. Estella is pretty but makes me think of the Estella in Great Expectations who was an unhappy character. India is ok but a bit overdone.
