Always liked this name. What do you think?
Any ideas which middle names sound good with it?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm in Scotland - it's not an older generation thing Confused It's probably used less by younger people because they (rightly so) aren't so bound by gender stereotypes and don't tend to use those terms as slurs, but you do still hear it. For that reason I wouldn't call it a cool name - a bit like calling your child Ned.

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 13/01/2022 17:20

@majorcaroledanvers are you in Scotland and do you know many called Jesse there?
Because we've never had that problem.

Honestly the "big Jessie" thing is such a myth for the older generation, and not relevant in 2022!

Blubells · 13/01/2022 17:09

Jesse will naturally get shortened to Jess. I'm not keen, sorry.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/01/2022 17:05

As long as you are not likely to move to Scotland where a Jesse is an effeminate, weak man. Ya Big Jessie.

Mamamamasaurus · 13/01/2022 17:03

American. Or Australian. I don't care for it for a boy.

notacooldad · 13/01/2022 17:01

Nearly every name I came up for my baby someone had a negative for it.
I suggested George , ' oh dont call him that "They'll "all come hime Georgie Porgie!
Ok What about Jack?
Oh " They'll"call him...... cant remember what the slur was.
My lad went to school with George, Jack, Jesse, Silas Ambrose and others and no one cared! Not one person.
I wish I'd followed my choice more. I did end up asking the person who are all these people that are name calling!!🤣

Tahitiitsamagicalplace · 13/01/2022 16:53

I have a Jesse, and I'm Scottish. We got a lot of pushback from the ILs before he was born, saying people would call him a big Jessie as a homophobic insult. He's 8 now, and no one has ever called him that, or ever said anything negative about his name at all.

I think it's a boomer generation type thing that think "ya big Jessie" is an insult.

Go for it OP. My Jesse is so loving and kind, very musical, sporty, liked by everyone, and people (Scottish people!) always say they love his name. His middle name begins with J too Smile

weegiemum · 13/01/2022 16:49

Also say don't use it in Scotland! Though my dd2 has Jessie as a middle name (after my Gran) and she loves it!

liveforsummer · 13/01/2022 16:48

I'm in Scotland and not heard it as an insult in years

Justbecause88 · 13/01/2022 16:48

I absolutely love this name and am desperate to use it for our little boy due in March. DH won't even entertain it because of "you big Jesse" comments Hmm

Beebababadabo · 13/01/2022 16:45

And the Scottish apparently.

SirChenjins · 13/01/2022 16:44

I don't think it's said as an insult in this day and age other than maybe older people

And people of varying ages in other parts of the UK Smile

Beebababadabo · 13/01/2022 16:43

I like it. Jesse I think sounds masculine. I don't think it suits calling a girl Jessie. I've only heard of Jessica or Jess for a girl, where I'm from. As for the expression "big Jessie" it's really just something my dad would say and he is like 70. I don't think it's said as an insult in this day and age other than maybe older people.

Cas112 · 13/01/2022 16:40

I love it!!!

Aria999 · 13/01/2022 16:38

@notacooldad I hope you're right. That would be a great development!

SirChenjins · 13/01/2022 16:34

‘You big Jessie’ is still very much alive and well here in Scotland - it’s very definitely not a cool, edgy name for a boy. It might be different in other parts of the UK though - regional differences etc.

Blubells · 13/01/2022 16:30

I only know girls and (female) dogs called Jessie.

Really don't like It for a boy/man

AtillatheHun · 13/01/2022 16:19

I have a super cool cousin Jesse. He rocks it well, it’s a name for a confident and cool person and he wears it. Love it therefore by association.

Joolsin · 13/01/2022 16:18

Gorgeous name, I love it.

Kittycat24 · 13/01/2022 16:17

@PattyPan

It’s ok. For some reason it’s always made me picture a blond Californian surfer dude type! Jesse Robert?
Robert was my Grandad's name so a strong contender Smile x

Giggorata · 13/01/2022 15:40

I really like it but in the past, have heard it used as a homophobic insult for supposedly effeminate boys.
I'd hope it has died the death it should have by now.

livinthedream1995 · 13/01/2022 15:35

I had my youngest last month and we settled on Jesse for his middle name ☺️ I (obviously) like it!

Newuser82 · 13/01/2022 15:31

Jesse is a gorgeous name! Go for it

notacooldad · 13/01/2022 15:23

I like it but he might get bullied for having a girl name. You know what kids are like
No, I dont.
Years ago there may have been lots of name calling but there are so many different and, to some people seemingly unusual names that young people seem more open to names.
So.e of the names of the young people I work with include Talon, Charles, Gideon, Chardonnay, a Amos, and so on. These are the less ' out there ' names ( Charles is unusual where I live, most kids are called Charlie)

As for the name Jesse, my son's friend is called this. I met him 15 years ago when he was a small kid. He is 22 now and everyone adores him. I have never known anyone to mock his name.
