DD due in May is most likely going to be called Elizabeth. What are your favourite diminutives or shortened forms for it? Thanks

Zizi from Elizabeth is nice, its also something that you don't hear a lot too.

Snowiscold · 13/01/2022 07:12

@ringoutthebells

I like Effie for short.
Effie isn’t short for Elizabeth. It’s short for Euphemia.

On my birth certificate I have a longer different name than what my parents called me. I absolutely hate going to the doctors hospital dentist etc as I don't feel connected to that name. It still feels like they are referring to someone else and I'm 37. Most probably wouldn't care but thought it was worth a mention.

Twizbe · 13/01/2022 06:45

I'm an Elizabeth. It's a really great name.

As a child I was Lizzie and now as an adult I use Liz.

My screen name is the nickname my older brother gave me, I've never met another who uses Twiz or Twizbe.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 13/01/2022 06:29

I love Bess

ringoutthebells · 13/01/2022 06:18

I like Effie for short.

WeasilyPleased · 12/01/2022 22:57

Lizzo cos I'm a big fan!

Roaren · 12/01/2022 22:54

I have an Elizabeth. I tend to call her the full version because I love it (and especially when she was a baby it lent itself to a little sing-song rhythm which used to make her giggle). As soon as she went to school, she was called Lizzie which I absolutely love now even though it wouldn’t have been my No 1 nickname to start with. I liked the idea of Bette or Bets but it never suited her.

I’ve heard Lettie used for another Elizabeth which I love but didn’t know about at the time! I know a grown up Elizabeth who goes by Lil.

Laureatus · 12/01/2022 22:49

Yay, Great choice! I'm an Elizabeth and I love it, I really think it's the best girl's name. I have always been Lizzie. My parents called me Elizabeth (it was the name they gave me after all), until I was trying to say my name myself, and I could only manage 'Liddy' so everyone presumed I was saying Lizzie. I really don't like what I think of as the babyish shortenings like Libby or Betsy, and I also don't like Liz as it sounds too harsh. But there are so many to choose from!

Strange but true- Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mothers childhood nickname was Buffy

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/01/2022 21:53

Lizbie
Libby
Buffy

RandomMess · 12/01/2022 21:52

At home it's Buffy but with friends Liz.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/01/2022 21:50

I like classic, Tudor style Bess most - although Bizzy or Buffy are super cute on little ones. Elsa is pretty cool too (no pun intended Grin).

Turnoffthelight · 12/01/2022 21:49

I’ve got a toddler called Elizabeth. We chose it because of all the great nicknames. She gets called Elizabeth as that’s what sh insists on and I can’t actually imagine shortening it. Great name!

CaveMum · 12/01/2022 21:46

Owner of an Elizabeth here - we use the full name and she prefers it that way. She knows she can pick and choose from a wealth of shortened versions when she is older. It’s a classic name but not too popular, she’s the only one in her Year and there are only 2 others in her school.

BlueberryJam123 · 12/01/2022 21:41

Libby.
Also Eliza and Elsie

RuthW · 12/01/2022 21:24

Lizzy

Fleur405 · 12/01/2022 21:15

I like Eliza and Beth very much.

ElephantInPrint · 12/01/2022 21:07

It is a beautiful name as it is.

timestheyarechanging · 12/01/2022 19:55

One of my best and oldest friends (30 odd years) is Elizabeth. She went by Liza for a few years in the 80s until she met her husband - 20 odd years ago and he has a sister called Liza so Elizabeth went back to her full name. I would never shorten it, her preference is Elizabeth so, Elizabeth it is!

Huntswomanonthemove · 12/01/2022 19:38

I love the name Elizabeth, I wouldn't shorten it.

MissMatty2hats · 12/01/2022 19:36

My daughter is Libby, only new teachers call her Elizabeth. I thought giving her options was a good idea but she often says she wish we’d just called her Libby. She hates having a name which doesn’t feel like her on official forms etc.

DramaAlpaca · 12/01/2022 19:34

Lizzy/Lizzie or Libby.

Reallycantbesarsed · 12/01/2022 19:25

My sister is Elizabeth and has always been called Lizzie

Cotswoldmama · 12/01/2022 19:19

Beth
