Sylvie or Robyn

DP and I have whittled it down to two names for our little girl due in March. Which name do you prefer? I keep flitting between the two... DP is slightly more in the Robyn camp, but loves both. I THINK I'm slightly more in the Sylvie camp, but that might just be because I'm flitting that way today. I'm hoping she'll just come out and look like one of them!

DDs name is Maggie.. I think Robyn goes slightly better as they don't end with the same sound, but I think Maggie and Sylvie is OK too.

Thanks everyone! Hadn’t considered the bird theme and my DP does call Maggie Magpie sometimes! Not sure how much it bothers me though.

I really like the look and sound of Sylvia but can’t shake the image of a depressed 60yo barmaid! Sylvie on the other hand seems artsy and chic.. weird what a difference a couple of letters can make.

Broached Robin V Robyn with DP and he’s not keen on the Robin spelling… Ive asked him to “ponder” it as I think I’m coming around to preferring it!

I prefer Robyn

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/01/2022 22:31

Robin, spelt like that.

Sylvie is sweet mind you..

KineticSand · 11/01/2022 19:47

Sylvie

If you got with the other choice, Robin is the better spelling

solania · 11/01/2022 19:43

Robin is my preference but Robin/yn and Maggie run the risk of sounding a bit bird themed! Is her full name Maggie or Margaret?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2022 18:22

Sylvie for me - perhaps getting trendier but beautiful name imo.

I always think Robyn looks misspelt - Robin was originally a nn (for Robert or Roberta) derived/linked from the birds name so I think it should be spelt the same for both sexes just like other unisex "nature" names (Rowan, River etc).

CherryDocsInYrBalls · 11/01/2022 18:02

Robyn and Maggie are too similar sounding to robin and magpie so I wouldn't. Sylvie is too similar sounding to silly the way it would be pronounced where I'm from. So Sylvia would be my choice

Mamamamasaurus · 11/01/2022 17:55

Sylvie gives me the ick. Robyn isn't much better but it is slightly less frumpy

minmooch · 11/01/2022 17:52

Sylvie for sure - it's beautiful.

WishIwasElsa · 11/01/2022 17:52

My dd middle name is Robyn so I vote for that she's named after a Robin in the family but they are male and she is female hence the y

Omicrone · 11/01/2022 17:49

Love Robyn (or Robin, either spelling I like).

I dislike Sylvie, it's very 'InstaMum circa 2020'.

bravotango · 11/01/2022 17:49

Prefer Sylvia, but of the two I'd pick Robyn. I think two siblings ending in 'ie' is a bit twee

Chunkymenrock · 11/01/2022 17:46

Robyn, as I really dislike Sylvie. (I do hear 'robbin' as in stealing though, which puts me off a little. )

Biscuitsneeded · 11/01/2022 17:43

Sylvie. Robyn/Robin is a nice name but DS has 3 separate trans friends (they don't know each other) who are now known as Robin/Robyn, and I think the name's popularity is rocketing. It's popular for a reason, but I like Sylvie more.

If the 'ie' ending doesn't work with Maggie, what about Sylvia? I think that is lovely and due a revival...

changingstages · 11/01/2022 17:42

I love Robin but don't really like Robyn. Sylvie is awful.

Tal45 · 11/01/2022 17:36

Sylvie is much prettier and more sophisticated IMO

wingsofabird · 11/01/2022 17:33

Sylvie is lovely
Robyn in isolation isn't that overused but I get a bit bored of all the Rory, Roman, Reuben , Ronnie etc names. Those Ro.. names are all top 100 and still rising fast. All really different names , I accept that, but when you have a few in a class I get really confused and they blend together. So I think Robyn feels much less special than Maggie and Sylvie

wizzler · 11/01/2022 17:26

Robyn.. love it

Isgooglebroken · 11/01/2022 16:18

Robyn -with that spelling rather than Robin, as I’ve only known boys/men with that spelling.

Sylvie is gorgeous. Not keen on Robyn.

MargosKaftan · 11/01/2022 16:01

I like both, but don't like the idea of a rhyming sibling set of names, so in the Robyn camp. But if you aren't 100% sold on both, then perhaps start looking for a 3rd option ?

PoodleKaboodle · 11/01/2022 15:59

I love Robyn! It’s Rihanna’s real name and she’s a sassy chick so that wins it for me.
I’d definitely spell it with a Y though as the boys I know spell it with an I and it seems too masculine to me.

KisstheTeapot14 · 11/01/2022 15:58

I like both - they are pretty names - but Robin with an I is great.

Jemimapuddleduk · 11/01/2022 15:54

Absolutely love both your choices so it’s very hard to choose. I would defo go with Robin spelling though.
