Sylvie or Lottie

I must have literally looked at every single name there is by this point. The only name me and my dh agree on and like more than any other is Charlotte (nn Lottie) but I keep coming back to Sylvie! DD1’s first name is two syllable and ends in a. Dh isn’t that keen but I’m hoping he’ll concede once he’s seen me go through labour again, as I get the impression he’d have let me name DD1 yoda if I’d so wanted after seeing me give birth! Blush what are your thoughts given a choice between the two?!

Charlotte

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/01/2022 22:32

Sylvie
Charlotte is lovely but it’s way overused

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/01/2022 19:45

I really love Charlotte known as Lottie

If DH still isn’t keen on Sylvie when the baby arrives you shouldn’t use it, you should both love her name

user1493494961 · 11/01/2022 18:50

I would choose Charlotte/Lottie.

OkThenJustChill · 11/01/2022 13:55

I love Sylvie.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2022 12:35

Ah, I can see why picking a name is harder if DD1 has a very unusual name Smile. As you probably know, Lottie (top 60) and Charlotte (top 20) are both very popular - much more so than Sylvie despite it gradually rising.

But ultimately it really has to be a name you both like as much as "working" with DD1's name - and Charlotte is one of those "can't go wrong" names for girls imo (like Emma, Eleanor, Alice, Anna etc) whose history means it feels pretty timeless even though technically it wasn't very popular in the mid 20th century.

Just a thought though, if it's the "Lottie" sound you like - have you also considered relatively uncommon but classic Juliet with the nn Ettie/Etta? (obviously there is similar Harriet too for the same nn but but that's much more popular).

Wellington17 · 11/01/2022 10:46

Sylvie every time! I absolutely love it - it's one of my final two.

To me Sylvie is more artsy whereas Charlotte/Lottie is a bit prim and proper. Not that Charlotte is a bad name at all - just not my style :)

Weredone · 11/01/2022 09:52

@IamnotwhouthinkIam Thankyou- this is really helpful! DD1 has a very unusual name (less than 20 born in the country in her year I think) which has made picking a name for the second much harder! But I do think it goes very well with Lottie and actually less well with Sylvie

@DotDotDotDotDot I stupidly hadn’t considered this but we do live somewhere where there is an emphasis on the ‘t’!

@lottiegarbanzo I completely agree!

I’ve pitched Sylvie to dh again and he’s adamant he doesn’t like it (although I’ve agreed to a third as long as I get to call her Sylvie if it’s another girl Grin) so Charlotte/Lottie it is! Smile

To my ear, Sylvie is chic, French, adorable.

Whereas Sylvia is old-lady British (plus Sylvia Plath).

Very different names.

peaceinourtime · 11/01/2022 05:47

they're both nice names.

garlictwist · 11/01/2022 05:31

Sorry but I really dislike Sylvie. It's such an old lady name. Lottie is better.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 11/01/2022 05:14

Sylvia and Sylvie are much lovelier.

Kokeshi123 · 11/01/2022 02:15

If your DH dislikes Sylvie, you can't use it. Charlotte is a nice classic name. Only use it if you actually like "Charlotte" though; she's unlikely to want to be "Lottie" as a teenager as it sounds like a young child's nickname.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2022 00:09

While I adore Sylvie (and to a lesser extent retro Sylvia) there is no doubt it's a trendier option than classic/traditional, "safe" Charlotte - Sylvie's been gradually rising over the last 15/20 years as people look for a soundalike for popular Sophie, Evie and Ivy (all top 30).

Does DD1 also have a fairly classic/popular name? Could be why DH prefers Charlotte. Charlotte would also give her the benefit of lots of nn choice if she dislikes it - there's also Callie/Carrie as well as Lottie and Charlie/Carly. Not trying to put you off by the way - both are nice choices and as I said I really love the sound of Sylvie, but just other things to consider.

WallopBang · 10/01/2022 22:39

My daughter is Charlotte and I had big dreams of calling her Lottie.

Only 1 person in my family has stuck with it and it wasn't me!

Nick names are strange, I think. You can't always pre-empt them as the full name doesn't always match the personality.

She's more of a Charlie these days than Lottie

NannyR · 10/01/2022 22:22

Charlotte Sylvie works really well, I think.

Hibye23289 · 10/01/2022 22:19

Lottie!! I would have named my next baby that if I had another instead I named it my pet. Sylvie seems abit old fashioned for a child abit like Sylvia

whatsinaname2 · 10/01/2022 22:16

I have a Sylvie, so I'm biased. I love her name.

22itsallnew · 10/01/2022 21:59

Sylvie

SummaLuvin · 10/01/2022 21:55

it doesn't matter how many people on here love Sylvie, there are two people in the world whose opinion matters on the name, and one of them (your DH) doesn't like it, it's a shame if you love it, but it's a no go.

Edenember · 10/01/2022 21:52

I prefer Sylvie. Really lovely.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/01/2022 19:29

Sylvie is lovely.

Charlotte is also an excellent name.
