Ivy was on the list as one of my top baby girl names. I picked out Margaret for the middle name, baby girl is due this week. Any thoughts on what you think of this name?

I like it. But you could change Margaret to something similar or add another name to avoid IMP.

Ivy Margot
Ivy Greta
Ivy Margareta

Ivy Theodora Margot P
Ivy Margareta Grace P
Ivy Olivia Greta P
Ivy Margaret Rae P

Too stuffy. The names are ok on their own but too much together, Pritchard doesn't help.

TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 10/01/2022 11:31

I like it. My first thought was character in an Agatha Christie drama.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/01/2022 11:30

aka IVP

lottiegarbanzo · 10/01/2022 11:30

If Ivy is now really popular, I guess she'll be Ivy P.

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/01/2022 11:27

Ivy is really popular so she'll be Ivy Pritchard most of the time

lottiegarbanzo · 10/01/2022 11:20

The other thing I notice, is that different first names make me pronounce the surname differently.

I-vy Pritch-ard (Plod, plod, Plod, plod, walking horse)

Pen-EL-o-pe PRITCH-ud (sound of a horse cantering past!)

ladycarlotta · 10/01/2022 11:13

If you like it, go with it OP!

Ivy is a lovely name, Margaret is solid and classic, Pritchard is fine. Nobody in her peer group is going to have reference points for 50-100 years ago and it really won't be an "old lady name", it will be a kid name. Ivy will be at school with Ada, Edie, Reggie and Arthur, after all.

Oddly, there is something about the name Pritchard that sounds old-fashioned (how can a surname be old-fashioned?).

Agree, on both points. That Pritchard sounds old-fashioned and yet I understand that surnames don't change so can't be old-fashioned.

Maybe I've only come across the surname in vintage fictional settings.

lottiegarbanzo · 10/01/2022 10:57

Penelope Pritchard sounds fab. Penny Pritchard.

Oddly, there is something about the name Pritchard that sounds old-fashioned (how can a surname be old-fashioned?). Maybe it's just that it's very consonant-y sounding, or something about the 'Pr' and 'tch' sounds, which sound a bit starchy and precise.

Anyway, something a bit more flowing, or light-footed would work better than Ivy, which sounds slow and staid.

To my ear, Ivy is very dirge-y. It's n the 'Queenie, Gertie and Vi' camp of not very attractive Edwardian names.

strawberrymilk7 · 10/01/2022 10:47

I like it. All of it. She sounds strong, clever, and knows what she wants.

Chunkymenrock · 10/01/2022 10:03

Not keen at all. Really frumpy names. You did ask!

Anotherhill · 10/01/2022 10:00

I like it. I like the IMP as a nickname. No one will know the Margaret middle name anyway, so if it’s a family name then don’t worry what some others may think.

KirstenBlest · 10/01/2022 09:55

I don't like Ivy

Margaret is nice

WimpoleHat · 10/01/2022 09:25

IMP was my first thought. But Ivy Pritchard sounds nice enough - and I do like Margaret.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 10/01/2022 09:25

Oh dear, poor child, dreadful names.

VitalsStable · 10/01/2022 09:24

You need a prettier name with the surname Pritchard. Ivy Margaret sounds like she should wear a tabard!

NewYearNewKale · 10/01/2022 09:19

Yes the initials might make me think again.

NewYearNewKale · 10/01/2022 09:18

I like Margaret.
Iris is a lovely name.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/01/2022 09:16

I love it! I think the Pritchard is what makes it perfect.

Sheabutterisdelish · 10/01/2022 09:14

Really awful, honestly how can anyone say it's lovely? It brings Joyce Grenfell to mind, just cruel.

Saltypeppa · 10/01/2022 09:13

I love it! I don't know any little ones called Ivy so I'm surprised it's so high in the top names

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 10/01/2022 09:10

Lovely

piney07 · 10/01/2022 05:05

Margaret is a lovely name - but no one will know your daughter by her full name - they’ll think of her as Ivy Pritchard. I love the name Ivy but I’m not convinced it goes that well with Pritchard! I think something like Penelope Pritchard or Frances Pritchard or Charlotte Pritchard would work better - Ivy seems a bit dominated by the Pritchard.

Ceramide · 10/01/2022 05:01

Ivy is great. Not so keen on Margaret but a derivative such as Greta would be nice.
